How to create an envelope follower in Reaktor 6 Primary and set your synth to automatically follow the amplitude of drums.
An envelope follower is a device that converts the amplitude envelope of an audio input into a control signal. Once we have that control signal, we can use it to control whatever we want. We can make the amplitude of an oscillator follow the amplitude of the input, or we could move the cutoff frequency of a filter, panning, etc.
Building the envelope follower is rather straightforward, just two steps: of rectifying and then low-pass filtering. In this video I walk through the process, and then show a few different applications.

Doing some live processing of sleigh bells in Pure Data to create an Interactive Holiday Noise Music System.
Since its mid-December, lets make some holiday music. If youre sick of the standard cloying Muzak fare, though, you can make your own feedback delay sample-crushing interactive music system in Pure Data in less than an hour.
The main point here is getting a trigger from audio input crossing a loudness threshold. Once we have that trigger, we can use it to make changes in live-processing of a sound and trigger other sounds too. This is a simple idea, but its effectiveness is going to depend on what these changes are and how we play with the system.
