New Testament scholar Eric Barreto presented Yale Divinity School’s three-part Shaffer Lectures April 1-3, 2025. Titled “Reading Luke with Time.”
Eric D. Barreto is the Frederick and Margaret L. Weyerhaeuser Associate Professor of New Testament at Princeton Theological Seminary. He earned a B.A. in religion from Oklahoma Baptist University, an M.Div. from Princeton Seminary, and a Ph.D. in New Testament from Emory University. Prior to joining the Princeton faculty, he served as Associate Professor of New Testament at Luther Seminary and taught as an adjunct professor at Candler and McAfee schools of theology.
Barreto is the author, coauthor, or editor of four published books; among them, Exploring the Bible (Foundations for Learning), coauthored with Michael Chan (Fortress, 2016). Two more are forthcoming, All of You Are One: Paul and the Construction of Ethnic Theologies and A People for God’s Name: Theology and Ethnicity in the Acts of the Apostles.

Lecture 1, April 1: “Reading Luke Backwards”
Lecture 2, April 2: “Reading Luke in Puerto Rico”
Lecture 3, April 3: “Reading Luke in the Days to Come”
The Shaffer Lectureship was established in 1929 by a gift from John C. Shaffer of Chicago as a memorial to his son, Kent Shaffer 1907 Ph.D., to sponsor lectures on the life, character, and teachings of Jesus. This series is given every second year, alternating with the Nathaniel W. Taylor lecture series.
