VIDEO SUMMARY
In this video, I respond to Jenna Marbles' latest vlog: "Things I Don't Understand About Girls 2: Slut Edition". I begin by acknowledging that the video embodies a few major myths about sluts and continue on to deconstruct these myths. Section 1 covers what slut shaming actually is and what kind of mentality it breeds. Section 2 covers how slut shame comes from the expectation that women earn our approval by obeying social demands of their sexual behavior. Section 3 covers how slut shame is a way that women "pay for sleeping around" - a sexist double standard that does not affect men. Section 4 covers the topic of "self respect" and the society-wide need to respect peoples' choices as the first step toward healthy sexuality.
INEVITABLE COMMENTS
"Learn to take a joke!"
I live and work in the YouTube community with thousands of young women who already struggle with this, who are blamed for rape because of these attitudes, who are bullied, and feel powerless. So sorry that this type of stuff is a red flag that isn't funny to me.
"It's HER opinion -- she's allowed to have it!"
I agree. And so am I. Hence, this video.... :)
"You suck."
