Graph of solar power production over time was created in freeware, Graphmatica. Year on x-axis, capacity by beginning of year in gigawatts (GW) on y-axis, formula is my own exponential curve of best fit:
y=1.35^(x-1998)
i.e. assumes 1GW produced by 1998, at 35% growth rate.
Professional estimates as to growth rate of solar capacity range from 30% (found in Peter Diamandis' book, Abundance: The Future Is Better Than You Think) to over 60% (found in various articles on CleanTechnica).
Source of data inputted on graph:
treehugger.com/renewable-energy/solar-panels-are-going-glut-shortage-first-time-2006.html
The article seems to suggest what I said about an eventual slowing of the trend.
