Description by Bart Wagemans:
Chest Maps where a feature from Rayman Origins wherein the player chases a sentient chest through a scripted obstacle course. During my internship I was asked to design a Chest Map titled Rocks 'n Roots, which quickly became one of my favourite designs. The brief described the theme as a overgrown ruins and 'sentient' roots. Chest maps have a heavy emphasis on rhythm, throguh pacing and actions being performed up to three times in a row based on a timing or anticipation factor. Focus is on a series of wet roots (with big jumps in between) at the start and end of the level; these roots provide a satisfying speed boost while building anticipation for the jump, which in turn is larger than normal due to momentum. In between these sections of roots I created a collapsing ruin where the player is pressured by moving spiked roots, adding to the tension. Lastly in order to end on a high note I opted to have the player break supports holding up the roof of a ruin that subsequently collapses. Sadly the game mode was dropped for Legends' final release, though a play-through video is available in the video section.
