Cheeseoman | Rayman 2 (N64) Language Comparison @cheeseoman | Uploaded April 2014 | Updated October 2024, 7 hours ago.
The thought occurred to me a while back that cutscenes in Rayman 2 might be faster in some languages than others, especially the cutscenes where you have to press A to advance through text. I didn't want to go through the tedious process of timing every cutscene in every language, but I finally got around to it. It would be boring to watch them all, so this video only includes cutscenes where you can clearly see the differences between the languages. In the lower-right corner, the language with a 0 next to it is the fastest up to the beginning of the current cutscene. The other numbers describe how many frames behind each other language is. These results include the cutscenes not shown in the video. Here are the final rankings:
1. Italian
2. English: +99 frames (3.3 seconds)
3. Spanish: +147 frames (4.9 seconds)
4. German: +209 frames (7.0 seconds)
5. French: +323 frames (10.8 seconds)
I was hoping for a bigger difference, but at least now I know for sure that Italian is the fastest. It isn't the fastest in every cutscene, but switching languages in the middle of the game would probably cost more time than it saves, so it seems best to stick with Italian the whole time.
