I've thought it should be possible to hit this cage from below for a long time but today I actually found something. And by sheer chance, there's an extremely easy setup for it! You hold down during the little intro cutscene until you gain control, this will give you a good angle. Now use the strafe mode to keep this angle and lure the shell.
I don't know if this saves any time (and if it does it's probably not much) but I'm just happy to have found something new! ^^
