Yevgeny Malinin began learning piano with Tamara Bobovich at the Central Special Music School at the Moscow Conservatory. He completed his piano studies at the Conservatory with Henry Neuhaus, graduating in 1954. Between 1954 and 1957 he completed his apprenticeship with Neuhaus, after which he stayed at the Conservatory as Neuhaus’ teaching assistant.
While still a student, he won 1st prize (ex-aequo with Tamara Guseva) at the International Youth and Students Festival in Budapest in 1949 and 7th prize at the Chopin Competition in Warsaw, followed by 2nd prize (ex-aequo with Philippe Entremont) at the 1953 Long-Thibaud International Competition in Paris.
Malinin was also a prolific teacher. Dean of the Piano Department at the Moscow Conservatory between 1972 and 1978, he received the title of professor in 1972. For many years he held masterclasses at Fontainebleau and Dijon where he founded a music institute bearing his name.
