The German “Rauhnächte” or “twelve days of Christmas” is an ancient pagan feast that has its roots in the time of the Celtic tribes. Here in our region in south-west Bavaria, they start in the night from December 24 to December 25 (on Christmas eve, there are some regional differences about the beginning and duration). It is a time of introspective, reflection and preparation for the next year. Each of the twelve days stands for one month in the new year – so December 25 represents January, December 26 February and so on. There are also lot’s of oracle and divination practices, that are traditionally hold during that time – you can learn more about that in the video from ‘the witches’ cookery’. The word origin of “Rauhnächte” is probably the German word “Rauch” which means smoke. That could be, because it’s a widespread tradition to smoke cleanse the house during that time with all different kinds of herbs or spruce needles. Back in the days the smoke cleansing should expel demons and evil spirits, but as most people don’t believe in those things anymore, we can also see it as a purification of our place or a getting rid of old energy. When you finished the smoke cleansing, the custom is to open the window and let the fresh wind of the Rauhnächte take away the old energies together with the smoke and bring in new freshness and purity. I think the Rauhnächte, twelve days of Christmas or juletid are a wonderful feast to get clear about your goals, reflect on your life and calm down during the darkest days of the year. It’s just natural to do that, because nature also looks like it’s taking a break superficially. Nothing is growing and the forest animals and birds are very silent and withdrawn. But it’s not that there is happening nothing – the plants and animals are actually gathering strength to prepare for new growth n the following months. So the Rauhnächte should be a time for us in which we do it like nature and prepare for the new year. But for us it’s more a mental than a physical process. I love to write in a dairy during that time, because as I said each day stands for one month in the new year. So I write down what I feel, think and experience during the day and according to the pagan believe that should work as a preview of the related month. I also crafted a vision board to visualize my dreams and goals. Visualization helps to get clear about your goals and makes you believe, that it is possibly, because you already see it in front of you every day. Then you’re also more likely to take the steps you need to take to achieve whatever you want to achieve.
