In this video, I take a look at the new & first ever official Raspberry Pi touchscreen. This screen has been designed for the Pi and is fantastic if you’re after a 7-inch screen to include in your next project.

In the video I go into many of the features and things you should know about this touchscreen display. Afterwards you should have a good understanding on where this device stands strong and where it falls flat.
This screen is quite affordable and sits at 7 inches big. It can also support 10 finger capacitive touch and uses the DSI port for the display rather than the HDMI or GPIO. Unfortunately, the Raspberry Pi touch display doesn’t work with the older versions of the Raspberry Pi (a & b).
There appears to be no instructions on how to assemble the Pi and make the correct connections. I show in the video how to do this and it is a pretty straight forward process.
It is important to know that this will probably not give you a very good functional tablet if that’s what you plan on doing. It does however provide you with a great device to build some pretty awesome projects around. You can look at doing home automation, alarm clocks, temperature gauges and much more.
There are three different ways you can power the Raspberry Pi touch display. The first is to power each independently. Second is to power one then use a USB link to power the other. Finally, the third option is to power one and then power the other using the GPIO pins.
When you power the device on you may come across some issues. I recommend checking the ribbon cables and then updating your OS to make sure it has all the required packages.
The screen itself in my opinion is very nice and sleek but the lack of a case and basically no third party cases makes it a bit disappointing. If you have the time a DIY case would be perfect.

In this video I go through the process of setting up Raspberry Pi cayenne. This is a software package for the Pi that helps you create IoT projects fast thanks to an easy to use drag & drop interface. I also go through the steps of setting up a temperature sensor and an LED.

Installing MyDevices cayenne is a relatively straightforward process. All you need to do is make sure you have Raspbian installed and then sign up for an account at their website. Once signed up you can install it via the app or by copying a couple of command lines into the terminal for your Pi.
Adding sensors is also just as easy as installing the software. The hardest part will be connecting up the devices to the Pi correctly. For this I recommend looking at the tutorials that covers sensors, input & output devices. I have covered a few on my channel that you should take a look at if you’re interested.
Triggers & events within cayenne are a way you can have your Pi react to certain situations. In the video I show an example of sending an email and turning an LED on whenever my temperature sensor got to a certain temperature.
If you’re not a coder, then this will probably interest you as it is pretty much drag and drop as I mentioned above. You can create some amazing projects from using if then statements. On top of this time based events will allow you to have your Pi perform certain tasks at specific times. I really do just scrape on the basics in this video and will be looking at doing more projects in the very near future.
