The Artemis II astronauts traveled farther from Earth than anyone has ever been before. Scientists from Goddard and around NASA support them back on Earth.

![NASAs Pandora Mission Will Study Alien Atmospheres
Pandora, NASA’s newest exoplanet mission, is one step closer to launch with the completion of the spacecraft bus, which provides the structure, power, and other systems that will enable the mission to carry out its work.
Pandora is a small satellite that will provide in-depth study of at least 20 known planets orbiting distant stars in order to determine the composition of their atmospheres — especially the presence of hazes, clouds, and water. This data will establish a firm foundation for interpreting measurements by NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope and future missions that will search for habitable worlds.
Astronomers view the presence of water as a critical aspect of habitability because water is essential to life as we know it. But variations in light from a planets host star can mask or mimic the signal of water. Separating these sources is where Pandora will shine.
Using a novel all-aluminum, 45-centimeter-wide (17 inches) telescope, Pandora’s detectors will capture each star’s visible brightness and near-infrared spectrum at the same time, while also obtaining the transiting planet’s near-infrared spectrum. This combined data will enable the science team to determine the properties of stellar surfaces and cleanly separate star and planetary signals.
Over the course of its year-long prime mission, Pandora will observe at least 20 exoplanets 10 times, with each stare lasting a total of 24 hours. Each observation will include a transit, when the exoplanet passes in front of its star as seen from our perspective, which is when the mission will capture the planet’s spectrum.

![Hubble Finds Possible Triple System 3.7 Billion Miles Away
Today, we dive into the mysteries of the Kuiper Belt, home to thousands of icy remnants from the early solar system. Among these objects, scientists have cataloged over 3,000, yet they estimate there could be hundreds of thousands more, each spanning more than 10 miles in diameter, with Pluto being the most famous.
Recent research using data from the Keck Observatory and NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope has revealed a potential three-body system in the Kuiper Belt, known as the Altjira system. This discovery challenges traditional collision theories by suggesting that these triple systems might form directly from the gravitational collapse of material in the early solar disk.
The Altjira system, located roughly 3.7 billion miles away, demonstrates how even the most distant and faint objects can yield groundbreaking insights when observed over decades. Join us as we explore how these long-term observations are reshaping our understanding of the solar system’s formation and evolution.

![Ten Years at Mars with NASA’s MAVEN Mission
On September 21, 2014, NASA’s MAVEN (Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution) spacecraft entered orbit around Mars, beginning its ongoing exploration of the Red Planet’s upper atmosphere. The mission has produced a wealth of data about how Mars’s atmosphere responds to the Sun and solar wind, and how these interactions can explain the loss of the Martian atmosphere to space. Now, as MAVEN continues its mission, we can look back on the remarkable discoveries of its first ten years at Mars.

![Chasing Solar Eclipses With NASA Pilots
On August 12, 2026, a total solar eclipse will cross Russia, Greenland, Iceland, Spain, and Portugal. But some of the best views will come from 50,000 feet up, aboard NASAs WB-57 jet.
Flying through the stratosphere, the jet’s instruments study the eclipse from above most of Earth’s atmosphere, avoiding the clouds, dust, and water vapor that can blur the view.
As the Moons shadow races across the ground, the crew pushes the high-speed jet to stay inside totality for as long as possible, giving scientists and their instruments extra time to study the Sun.

![Artemis Science: Exploring the Moon’s South Pole
The Moon is our nearest celestial neighbor, orbiting Earth at less than a quarter of a million miles on average. Now, for the first time since 1972, NASA is preparing to send astronauts to the Moon with the Artemis missions. Artemis III will target landing sites near the lunar South Pole. There, ancient rocks, minerals, and trapped water ice will not only provide resources for human explorers, they may also contain clues to the formation and evolution of our planet and the solar system.

![NASA’s Illuminate: Largest Sunspot in Almost a Decade
This is the biggest sunspot we’ve seen in over a decade!
Sunspots are cooler, darker areas on the solar surface where the Sun’s magnetic field gets especially intense, often leading to explosive solar eruptions. This sunspot was so big that nearly 14 Earths could fit inside it! The eruptions from this sunspot resulted in the historic May 2024 geomagnetic storms, where the aurora borealis, or northern lights, were seen as far south as the Florida Keys.
