A RARITY for many Glen Campbell fans: Glen singing "Take Me Out to the Ball Game," the American baseball fan song standard. Recorded for an album released in promotion of Major League Baseball's Arizona Diamondbacks and Bank One Ballpark (now Chase Field), the album was produced by Frank Boxberger and George Chadwick and recorded in Boxberger's garage studio in Phoenix, Arizona. At the time of this recording, Glen was both a Phoenix resident and a part-time owner of the Diamondbacks team. (c. 2023 DZ)
"Take Me Out to the Ball Game" is a 1908 Tin Pan Alley hit song by Jack Norworth and Albert Von Tilzer which later became the unofficial anthem of North American baseball, although neither of its authors had attended a game before writing the song! It was played at a ballpark for the first known time in 1934, during a high-school game in Los Angeles; it was played later that year during the fourth game of the 1934 World Series. One year later, the tune became part of pop culture history: in the 1935 Marx Brothers' film A Night at the Opera, in one of the more unusual and humorous uses of the song, composer Herbert Stothart arranged for a full pit orchestra to segue seamlessly from the operatic overture of Verdi's Il trovatore into the chorus of "Take Me Out to the Ball Game."
