I also forgot to mention: yes, academics do write books. But often these are way too expensive for ordinary people to buy, and unavailable in ordinary libraries. Meaning there's this continual vicious cycle of academic information being a bubble where only other academics can access them. It's not so bad for big topics, as it filters easily onto the internet. But for obscure topics? You're kinda buggered, really.
