Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683 – 1764) was one of the most important French composers and music theorists of the 18th century. He replaced Jean-Baptiste Lully as the dominant composer of French opera and is also considered the leading French composer of his time for the harpsichord, alongside François Couperin.
"La Princesse de Navarre" is a comédie-ballet in a prologue and three acts, with a libretto by Voltaire and music by Jean-Philippe Rameau.
An occasional work, the piece was performed in the Grande Écurie of the Palace of Versailles on February 23, 1745, to mark the marriage of the Dauphin Louis (son of Louis XV) to the Infanta Maria Theresa of Spain.
