Divided into three stages, Rambo must search a prison camp and rescue Colonel Trautman, set the timers on explosives in a compound full of Russian armour and choppers, before finally commandeering a tank and ploughing through enemy forces in a pretty dull Operation Thunderbolt type section.
I suspect most players will spend the bulk of their play time stuck on stage 1. The sprawling maze of rooms, booby trapped electrified door and minefields result in a lot of aimless wandering around guard huts which all look the same. Certain rooms contain items you can use to overcome certain hazards, and you'll find additional weapons to bolster Rambo's arsenal, but it's all rather dull.
This would all be rather forgettable, were it not for the ace music by Jonathan Dunn. Martin Galway's Rambo II score was always going to be difficult to beat, but I reckon the music in Rambo III lives up to expectations.
Other than that, it's just the typical multi-stage, mini-game approach Ocean used for so many of their move licenses. This certainly isn't the worst of them, just rather uninspiring.

What happens when you fuse Kung Fu Master and Bruce Lee? You get something like China Warrior. This is an unashamed rip-off of Irems arcade classic, albeit one with improved graphics, some parallax background layers, and some surprisingly catchy music. Your sprite auto-walks to the right, and you simply have to punch, kick and avoid anything and everything which appears. The regular enemies offer zero opposition, so the challenge is trying to memorise the patterns of projectiles the game hurls at you at regular intervals.
Each level culminates with a boss fight, which requires you to whittle down their health bar while avoiding taking too many hits in return. Pressing button 1 or 2 just as the enemy attacks will initiate a guard move to block the incoming attack, although this takes split-second timing to work correctly. The opponent can also block attacks, and doing so will leave you open to a counter-attack, something the enemy doesnt suffer from. Its all rather fiddly and annoying, and simply serves to rub salt in the wound.
No, China Warrior is NOT a good game. Kung Fu Master had its fair share of problems on release in 1984, and this repeats all the same mistakes 3 years later. Theres a certain novelty factor due to the games obscurity, but dont expect to have a good time playing this.

13 years ago I subjected myself to playing through what is arguably one of the worst video game adaptations of a movie ever created. The C64 version of Predator is painfully slow, sluggish, incomplete shambles of a game, with the PAL version rendered unbeatable due to omission of a functioning log trap to beat the titular Predator. Over a decade later, I figured Id finally built up sufficient courage to tackle the Amiga port. It surely couldnt be any worse than the original C64 game, could it?
The short answer to that question is no, its not any worse, but it is equally as bad. The 68000 CPU, Copper, extra memory and graphics capabilities of the Amiga made precious little difference to this absolutely dumpster fire of a game, simply because the game design is absolutely identical to the C64. The player assumes the role of Major Alan Dutch Schaeffer, the solve surviving member of an elite special operations unit sent on a rescue mission into the heart of the hellish jungles of South America, taking out local guerrilla forces, whilst discovering the grisly fate of his fallen comrades.
Understandably, the designers needed to take liberties with the original movie script to make the plot fit within the mechanics of a video game from this era, but the execution is lamentably poor. Enemy soldiers open fire before you can even see them, whittling down your limited health bar in seconds, filling the screen with bullets that you can barely see, let alone avoid. The various guns you can collect from your fallen comrades are all functionally identical, with no defining characteristics, other than a different graphic displayed at the top of the screen. Hand grenades are of little to no use, given their explosion radius is laughably small, and getting close enough to an enemy to even land a successful hit is pretty much suicide. Running out of ammunition during the first three levels means you might as well restart the game from scratch, because getting close enough to melee enemies is equally pointless.
As for the Predator, it looks as laughably poor as it did on the C64. The blocky brown splodge of a sprite is replaced with an ash grey version, which looks even worse. It looks absolutely nothing like the iconic alien hunter from the film, with its featureless dome head and grey skin making it more like the Xenomorph from the Alien franchise than a fearsome Yauja warrior. As with the Commodore 64 version, bullets and grenades have absolutely no effect, so youre forced to drop your gun and punch it in the face until it decided to wander off. Its impossible not to take damage during these sections, so your only hope of beating the game is to make sure you dont lose any of your lives before the final confrontation.
Speaking of which, the Amiga version does at least feature a working log trap, although youd be forgiven for missing it, given the graphics for the pulley and log look like just another part of the background scenery. You need to stand in precisely the right spot to raise the log, then time your pulls so when the log is fully raised, it comes crashing down on the Predators head. You only have a limited number of chances to master the timing before you run out of lives and the game ends.
So there we have it. The Amiga version sucks just as badly as the C64, which is probably a worse state of affairs, given the superior capabilities of the platform. The only redeeming feature here is the music during the title sequence, which is quite atmospheric, but it in no way redeems this awful adaptation of what is one of the greatest 80s sci-fi action movies of all time.

Ive always had a soft spot for this Conan-inspired homage, playing many an hour of the C64 and Amiga versions back in the day, but I wanted to see how other versions compared to the C64.
Despite the typically garish colour palette, the ZX Spectrum port is pretty decent. It plays pretty much identically to the C64, although it really suffers for the lack of decent music during the actual gameplay. The splats and beeps really pale into insignificance against Richard Josephs grandiose SID composition for the old breadbin, and the Spectrum also lacks the fountain of blood when chopping off an opponents head.
Speaking of head chopping, its really quite difficult to land a flying neck chop in this version. The CPU player is pretty good at avoiding the move, and youll more than likely take damage if you persist in trying.
In the Spectrums favour, the sprites are more detailed than their C64 counterparts, and the bad guys actually wear helmets and what appear to be torcs or medallions around their necks, differentiating themselves from the player. Given the colour clash issues with the Speccy, I guess the designers couldnt rely on colour, but this is still a neat touch.
For those unfamiliar with the plot, princess Marian has been captured and imprisoned by the evil sorcerer Draxx. An unnamed barbarian travels the lands, doing battle with Draxxs minions on a quest to free the princess. These encounters are all one-on-one fights to the death. Defeat each opponent by reducing their health to zero, or by lopping off their head with a well timed flying neck chop.
This is one of the greatest and most iconic games for the old 8-bit home computers, and arguably Palace Softwares most famous release.

Id never heard of Paramax, but comments on Lemon Amiga suggested it was an overlooked platform/shooter which, at least at first glance, looked similar to Turrican and Jim Power. Given that the instruction manual and reviews listed over on Hall of Light are all German, I suspect this didnt get a wide distribution, and I dont think this ever came out officially in the UK.
The gameplay, such that it is, is passable run-and-gun platformer with some decent graphics and a couple of cool tunes, but theres precious little content on offer to warrant a full-price release. Its only in the third and final level you encounter any of the games extra weapons, or get the impression that the developers had tried to construct a proper level. The first two have very little content of structure, other than some enemies to shoot. Even the manual seems to lack any kind of story or plot, simply explaining some of the mechanics.
Paramax feels like a Public Domain game which got a bit of extra polish, slapped on a disk and shipped to retail. Its not terrible, and shows some promise, but its simply too under-developed compared to its contemporaries.

Its time to done our tuxedos and shake our vodka martinis, as we check out S.P.Y Special Project Y, a secret agent-themed action game by Konami. Its yet another game from the studios back catalogue of arcade titles I had no idea existed, one that I have no recollection of ever seeing in any arcade I ever frequented.
Although Data Easts Sly Spy would be an obvious comparison, S.P.Y feels much closer in design to Namcos Rolling Thunder, although S.P.Y offers considerably more variety in its levels, including third-person shooting sections similar to the tunnel sections from Contra and Aliens. If nothing else, S.P.Y is certainly not wanting for variety.
Unfortunately, I dont think S.P.Y is a particularly enjoyable game. Despite the cool concept, each of the levels is frustratingly difficult, with the game besieging you on all sides with wave-upon-wave of fast-moving goons which give you little in the way of time to react to the situation. Getting swarmed constantly in this manner doesnt make for a satisfying experience, particularly when your punches and kicks dont always register like they should, with most of the game feeling like a chore. Although most sections provide you with screen-clearing smart bombs and fireballs, the majority of the game still feels like an up-hill slog. Just when you think youve beaten the final boss, it decides to pull a Ghost n Goblins on you by sending your right back to the beginning, forcing you to complete a second loop before giving access to the real ending.
Despite some cool theming, the swarms of enemies and slightly iffy collision mechanics means Special Project Y isnt a particularly fun experience. Its good for one credit, but I doubt youll want to insert coin to continue when given the opportunity.

Continuing my run of Metal Slug-related games, I played through the fourth game in the series. Having undergone bankruptcy proceedings and re-emerging as SNK Playmore, Metal Slug 4 was released for the Neo Geo (and other platforms) in 2002. It sticks to the tried-and-tested formula of its predecessors, introducing a smattering of new features, just to keep things fresh.
Following the extra-terrestrial shenanigans in Metal Slug 3, General Morden is is still up to his old tricks, this time allying himself and his army with the shadowy forces of a wealthy criminal syndicate. The aliens from the previous game have been jettisoned, resulting a game that feels more grounded, although theres still the occasional silliness with zombies, Egyptian curses and yetis thrown in for good measure.
Aside from new levels, the main addition to this release is the Metallish system which, in relatively simple terms, requires players to inflict as much damage and blow as much stuff up in as short a time as possible. Certain enemies will drop an emblem that will trigger the event when collected, and youre rewarded with up to four medals of differing colour, depending on how well you do. Achieving four white/silver medals is the ultimate achievement, although its really difficult to achieve this, and youre more likely to get green or red medals. This isnt a bad thing, though, with more medals earning you massive bonus points at the end of the stage.
In addition to the Metallish system, Metal Slug 4 introduces a new weapon in the form of dual machine guns, plus a new vehicle, if you can call a scrambling ride-on ape with a red light on its head a vehicle. There are also a couple of new characters to play, but these are really just window dressing - theyre all pretty similar.
Overall, Metal Slug 4 is really just more of the same, although, if Im honest, lacking some of the polish from previous entries. The end-of-level bosses, normally guaranteed to turn heads with their gargantuan size and beautifully rendered pixel art, dont feel as impressive this time around. The zeppelin boss from the opening level is a good example - theres not an awful lot of detail, and the minigun strapped to the under-carriage is clearly taken from General Mordens gunship in Metal Slug 1, yet pasted crudely onto the sprite. I wonder whether, with a shrinking market, the developers could afford to spend as much time on the overall presentation as they had done previously; it still looks fantastic, but not up to the lofty standards of the 1996 original.

The first game to give the pellet-gobbler a personality and image overhaul, not to mention legs and arms, Pac-Land set the foundations for future franchises starring Nancis classic arcade star.
Pac-Land is really nothing like the original Pacman, other than it incorporates characters and objects from the Pacman universe. The objective is to escort a magical fairy back to her native realm, traversing the spook-filled towns and valleys of the surrounding countryside, in a platform game that is often brutally unforgiving.
The chief difficulty in said game, and principal source of frustration, comes from the sections requiring Pac to springboard his way across large bodies of water. You have have to hammer the direction and jump buttons to maintain as much air time as possible, lest Pacman find himself swimming with the fishes. Getting through these sections is virtually impossible, not without a lot of practice, and the fact these appear relatively early on in the game mean many players probably never got beyond stage 3.
Difficulty aside, Pac-Land is quite impressive from a technical and visual aspect. For 1984, this boasts some really decent graphics and audio, so its still worth checking out.

Fairly typical vertical shoot em up in terms of features, although it feels a little behind the curve in terms of visuals and overall production values. By far the biggest issue with this is the difficulty, principally caused by the underpowered weaponry of the players ship, relative to the ridiculous damage sponges which account for most of the enemies you face. The final insult is the fact your weapons top level of power lasts for a limited time only, which is just silly.
For these reasons I failed to find much in the way of enjoyment here. The second loop something which the game didnt need removes virtually all of the gun upgrades and smart bombs, making Eight Forces an unenjoyable slog.

When I played through Dragon Spirit recently, I had no idea there was actually a sequel. Intrigued, I set about recording a longplay of Dragon Saber, only to find its unsurprisingly more of the same, only MUCH harder. The game retains the same air-to-air and air-to-ground combat mechanics of its predecessor, but the number of weapons available to the player is expanded, although my personal opinion is that at least half of these are useless and more likely to get you killed if you pick them up.
For some added context, the game typically introduces a new weapon with each additional stage you reach. Each weapon can be fired in rapid succession, but it can also be charged up for a special attack, which, in theory, can be used to deal with some of the tougher enemies youll face. On the default difficulty setting the enemies soak up a lot of damage, which means the weapon power-ups which focus on versatility, such as the screen-wide lightning attack, simply cant destroy enemies quickly enough.
On the subject of default difficulty, the version I played seemed to give the player a single life in which to beat the game, which is just crazy. Other videos online show the player with two lives from the outset, so this can obviously be configured. The sheer number of enemies, the end-of-level bosses, player sprite hitbox, not to mention scenery and associated environmental hazards that will kill you instantly only serve as a real turn-off.
Dragon Saber looks really cool and has an excellent electronica soundtrack, and I really wanted to like it, but aside from some enhanced graphics, its both too difficult and too similar to its predecessor to recommend.

Prior to recording this longplay, the only version of RoboCop Versus The Terminator Id played/owned was the Sega Genesis. Its not a particularly innovative game, but the depiction of crumbling dystopia, giving way to eventual battles against Skynet and its army of endoskeleton nightmares, was good fun. I loved the graphical style, particularly the way enemies got blown apart in gory, pixelated chunks, was very cool.
Moving over to the Super NES, Id expected the game to be the same. Given Nintendos stance on violence and market positioning as being the family-friendly option, Id expected the violence to be toned down compared to the Genesis, but I hadnt been expecting quite the number of changes as there are.
The levels between the two versions are broadly similar, and follow a similar arc, but Interplay, who handled development of this particular version, felt compelled to layer on some dull and pointless exposition through the use of comic book-style cutscenes. I get that the origins of the RoboCop and Terminator crossover stem from this medium, but I just found these sections dull, overly long, not to mention occasionally confusing.
To be honest, the gameplay isnt much better. From the level design to the enemies you face, everything feels dull and by-the-numbers. The game is competently programmed for sure, but at no point did I feel like I was having a good time. The SNES version shoehorns in a couple of first-person sections with some Mode 7 trickery, but again, its devoid of any real fun.
I need to go back and play the Genesis version to make sure Im not mis-remembering things, but having slogged my way through the drudgery of the SNES port, Id still plump for the Sega version over this. Presentation, graphics and suchlike are perfectly decent, but this could have been so much better.

The original Wonder Boy is one of those weird arcade classics which were popular at the time of release, although with its fruit-munching, platform-hopping, skateboarding shenanigans, its popularity was perhaps something of an enigma. Its very much of its time, more akin to the likes of Pac-Land and other basic side-scrolling platformers that were popular at the time.
When it comes to sequels, its usually the case that developers stick with the formula which made the original successful, dump the stuff which was bad, and generally iterate and improve on the original. That clearly didnt happen when Sega and Westone produced Wonder Boy in Monster Land, which goes in a completely and unexpected direction.
This is one of the earliest examples in a really weird sub-genre of, for want of a better description, action RPGs, which started to become popular, due in part to the success of Ataris Gauntlet. Wonder Boy in Monster Land retains the side-scrolling, platforming of its predecessor, but has the player killing monsters for gold coins, buying spells and upgrade from shops dotted throughout the levels, killing bosses for weapon and armour upgrades, and more besides. Its a brave departure from the original game, but the end result is something of a triumph. Action RPGs, particularly Diablo and all of its various incarnations, is one of my favourite genres of game; theres something about the constant upgrade cycle of killing enemies for loot, buying bigger and better weapons to kill even bigger monsters which just appeals to me. Admittedly, WIML is a very linear experience, but theres enough of that game loop on show that meant I really enjoyed my time with this. In fact, its the very template on which Wonder Boy III: The Dragons Trap (AKA Monster World II) is based, which was one of my favourite games on the Sega Game Gear.
As with many of these coin-op RPG hybrids, I think they make far more sense as games for the home market than they do the arcade. Youll need at least 40 minutes to play this through to completion, which is a length of time that seems amazing incongruous to the setting of a noisy, smoke-filled arcade. Perhaps the culture and arcade scene in Japan was different to that of the UK, insofar that the environment was conducive to such a prolonged experience, which may explain why the game never received an international release, at least not in its arcade form. The English translation shown in this video is derived from the 2005 Virtual Console release, complete with interesting translation text, but it does at least allow a wider range of players to experience what is, in my opinion, an excellent game.
