The Rainbow Pitta is a stunning resident of Forests of the Northern territory and the Northern Kimberley regions of Western Australia. They are mainly a terrestrial species that inhabit dense undergrowth but also fly to the canopy to call, maintaining their territory. As my video shows, they can blend in remarkably when seen from behind but when seen well, the contrasting plumage of Black, Green, Chestnut and Red makes them a delight to observe. This species becomes vocal around September, when they establish there territories. Their nest is usually build in the buttress roots of a tree around October or November depending on conditions. I had the pleasure of filming these around Darwin on a recent trip. Tim Siggs. ABVC.
