Raijin God of Thunder explained. Mortal Kombat’s timeless Raiden. This heroic Elder God has been through it all but did you know he also takes his name from the Japanese god of Thunder of the same name. This legend is vastly different in appearance, power and manner from Mortal Kombat’s Thunder god. Brace yourselves Mythstorians, for it’s about to get electric.
This Japanese god goes by several names: Raijin, Yakusa no ikazuchi no kami, Kaminari-sama, Narukami and Raiden-Sama. His name borrows from the Japanese words for god, Kami, and Thunder, Kaminari.
According to Japanese folklore, Raijin is believed to feast of the navels of young children. So, during storms, some parents tell their kids to cover their belly buttons or Raijin will snatch them and eat their belly button.
