Recently, I visited the warship Castlemaine, which has now become a museum. This corvette was created to protect the Australian shores during the difficult times of World War II.
Some devices on board continue to emit radiation, from control handles to instrument panels. Radioactive elements, such as radium and promethium, were used to create glowing instruments and markers, making it easier for the crew to work at night.
By emitting alpha particles, radium decays into radon and other radioactive elements in its decay chain. Its alpha decay causes the glow.
Although radium itself is an alpha emitter, it also emits beta and gamma radiation from the decay products that are always present with it.
The radioactive control elements on the ship are part of history and an example of the use of radioluminescent paint in military equipment.
Important Reminder: Always follow local laws and handle radioactive materials responsibly — for your safety and others'.
