Weaving Threads of Memory and Navigation as Radical Embodiment: (private) Diary for October 25: This impromptu diary is a fascinating concept that has recently reshaped my understanding of memory and navigation. This idea, stemming from Andrea Hiott's paper "Radical Embodied Relation at Any Scale from Navigating to Remembering," (link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11245-025-10256-7) challenges the traditional views held by neuroscience and philosophy. While it may seem daunting at first, let's explore these ideas on a general level.

Where Are Your Memories?
When you think about memories, where do you believe they reside? Most of us instinctively say "in the brain," but this assumption oversimplifies the complex nature of memory. To illustrate, consider the collar of a polo shirt. We rarely question its purpose, yet its design originally served as protection from the sun. Similarly, our understanding of memory often overlooks its deeper intricacies because it seems obvious.

The Misunderstood Nature of Memory
For over a century, neuroscientists have searched for the location of memories, often likening them to files stored on a hard drive. However, the more we delve into brain scans and images, the less certain we become about memory's exact location. Memory is not an isolated entity; rather, it functions as a form of communication within and with the world.
One of the brain's most intriguing areas, the hippocampus, plays a key role. Known for its association with memory, it's also involved in navigation, akin to a GPS system. Researchers like John O'Keefe and others discovered that cells in this region help us navigate our environment, suggesting that memory and navigation share the same neural mechanisms.

Radical Memory & Navigation
Our experiences are intertwined with physical navigation and mental exploration. For example, retracing steps to find a parked car involves navigating a mental space, much like moving through geographical spaces. These processes co-create each other, challenging traditional binary distinctions like mental vs. physical or memory vs. imagination.
Ultimately, representations of memory are not static forms stored in the brain. They are dynamic processes, akin to weather maps that help us communicate about the ever-changing world. Memories, then, are the communication between our embodied selves and our surroundings, woven into the fabric of radical embodied cognition.
By embracing this understanding, we can begin to appreciate the intricate dance of memory and navigation. Instead of retrieving stored files, we move through experiential spaces, interacting with our environment and the people around us. This perspective shifts our view of memory and the world, inviting us to explore the vibrant, sensual interaction of our being with everything we encounter.
