Here's a lesson plan that uses craft foam and AMACO Ceramic Printing INKs to teach students about radial designs!
Supplies: 🎨
- 6" x 6" tiles
- AMACO Ceramic Printing INKs ➡ shop.amaco.com/glazes-underglazes/ceramic-inks
- Velvet Underglaze ➡ shop.amaco.com/glazes-underglazes/underglazes/v-velvet-underglaze
- LG-10 Clear Transparent Glaze ➡ shop.amaco.com/lg-10-clear-transparent
- Mixing Cups
- Stippling Sponge
- Paper Towel or Newspaper
- AMACO Fan Brush ➡ shop.amaco.com/fitch-fan-brush
- 3”x3” Thick Craft Foam
- Adhesive Craft Foam Sheets or Pre-Cut Craft Foam Stickers
- Scissors
- Marker or Pen
- Baby Wipes (for clean up)
Steps:
1. Apply a thin wash of Velvet Underglaze (50% water + 50% underglaze) to your bisque tile. Let the tile dry.
2. Cut shapes from an adhesive craft foam sheet and attach them to your 3" x 3" craft foam square.
TIP: Use pre-cut craft foam stickers for younger students.
3. Add a small mark to one corner of the back of the stamp. This registration mark will help keep the design centered as you stamp.
4. Use a stippling sponge to apply AMACO Ceramic Printing INKs to the raised foam shapes.
TIP: Apply enough INK to fully cover the foam shapes, but keep the layer smooth and even. Too much INK can create unwanted texture and reduce detail.
5. Make a test print on newspaper or a paper towel.
6. Reapply INK to your stamp. Place your stamp in a corner of the tile with your registration mark.
7. Gently press the stamp with your fingertips to transfer the INK. Avoid pressing too hard as the stamp may slide.
8. Repeat the stamping process three more times, reapplying the INK before each stamp. Keep your registration mark centered to complete the radial design.
