Inspired by the Cuerda Seca technique, create two ceramic tiles featuring striking radial designs made with wax resist and rubber bands. Explore pattern, line, and color while contrasting warm and cool palettes to create movement and visual interest.
Supplies:
- Two 6" x 6" bisque tiles
- Pencil
- AMACO Fan brush
- 16-gauge AMACO underglaze applicator with Teacher's Palette glazes
- V-361 Jet Black Velvet Underglaze
- AMACO Wax resist
- Cotton swabs
- Rubber bands
- Straight edge or ruler
Instructions:
Step 1 - Apply a thin coat of V-361 Jet Black Velvet Underglaze to two bisque tiles and allow to dry.
Step 2 - Divide each tile into eight sections using diagonal, horizontal, and vertical guidelines
Step 3 - Sketch a radial design on the first tile using bold, simple shapes.
Step 4 - Trace the design with wax resist using a cotton swab and allow it to dry.
Step 5 - Repeat steps 3-4 on the second tile.
Step 6 - Apply Teacher's Palette glazes ot the unwaxed areas of the first tile using a personally selected color palette.
Step 7 - Stretch rubber bands horizontally and vertically across the second tile to create four quadrants.
Step 8 - Apply warm colors to two diagonal quadrants and cool colors to the remaining quadrants.
Step 9 - Allow both tiles to dry completely, then carefully remove the rubber bands.
Step 10 - Fire to cone 05.
