TEDx Talks | Racismo Esttico e os Impactos na Identidade de Pessoas Negras | Vanessa Mattos | TEDxBlumenau @TEDx | Uploaded 2 days ago | Updated 1 day ago
This talk addresses the aesthetic and identity empowerment journey of a Black woman who, over the years, challenged Eurocentric beauty standards and the racist pressures that negatively impacted her self-esteem. Starting in 2014, she began a process of liberation from these standards, learning to value her natural features, and in doing so, she started to inspire other Black women to do the same. It also explores the historical influence of aesthetic racism in Brazil, highlighting the psychological and social impact caused by the devaluation of Black physical traits, and how resistance and the reaffirmation of Black identity have been essential in deconstructing these oppressive standards. Beauty professional for 18 years, specialist in Afro aesthetics, and makeup artist. Graduated in Social Sciences from the Federal University of Gois and currently a master's student in Sociology at the same university. Conducts academic research in the field of Sociology, focusing on issues of racial identity, Afro-descendant aesthetics, and the implications regarding the concept of beauty. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
