The Leadville Race Series, established in 1983 by Ken Chlouber to revitalize the local economy after the closure of the Climax Mine, is a world-renowned collection of endurance events held in Leadville, Colorado, known as the highest incorporated city in North America at over 10,200 feet. The series includes iconic races like the Leadville Trail 100 Run, Leadville Trail 100 MTB, and the Leadville Trail Marathon and Heavy Half, attracting thousands of athletes globally to test their "Grit, Guts, and Determination" on the rugged, high-altitude trails of the Rocky Mountains. The Leadville Trail Marathon and Heavy Half, scheduled for June 28, 2025, are among the toughest in the series, with the marathon covering 26.4 miles and the Heavy Half spanning 15.4 miles, both ascending to Mosquito Pass at 13,185 feet, the highest continuous pass in the U.S. These races navigate historic mining district trails, offering breathtaking views but demanding exceptional endurance due to steep climbs, technical descents, and thin air, with elevation gains of 6,167 feet for the marathon and 3,421 feet for the Heavy Half.
Seth DeMoor, a 39-year-old runner from Lakewood, Colorado, and a prominent YouTube personality with 172,000 followers, won the 2024 Leadville Trail Heavy Half with a time of 1:52:55, just 52 seconds shy of his brother Joe’s course record set in 2022. Known for his daily vlogs offering shoe reviews, race recaps, and inspiration, DeMoor has a storied running career, including two Pikes Peak Marathon victories and a sub-66-minute road half marathon. His 2024 Heavy Half victory was a “rust buster” after a break from racing, showcasing his ability to compete at an elite level despite the challenging terrain and altitude. The Leadville community also celebrates post-race at local spots like the Grill, where runners and supporters gather to revel in the day’s achievements. The 2025 Leadville Trail Marathon and Heavy Half, part of the series’ qualifier events for the prestigious Leadville Trail 100 Run, promise another grueling yet rewarding experience for runners worldwide.
