ethno. Live music has been hit hard this year, and it seems a long way off still, but through out all of it, Vancouver-based hip-hop/RnB artist Makadi has continued to create and forge his path as an artist.

We managed to catch him at a couple shows before the pause, but most of our collaboration has occurred since - documenting various vignettes of his musical journey throughout an otherwise difficult year.

Hassan Al Kontar was a former Syrian refugee who had exiled from his home country after refusing to join the military in 2011. He made international headlines in 2018 after chronicling his experience being stuck in Kuala Lumpur International airport for seven months after his passport was revoked and he was left stateless.

Also known as “The Man at the Airport” - of which his self-written book is titled - Dylan sat down with Hassan to discuss his life, his journey as a refugee, and his experience being stranded at the airport and his subsequent time in jail. They also discuss the current state of global immigration and some of the prevailing cultural attitudes towards refugees in general.

Guy Felicella spent nearly 20 years living on the streets in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside homeless and addicted to drugs before getting sober and forging a new path for himself.

Today, Guy works with BC’s Coastal Health and tours as a public speaker, educating folks on harm reduction and sharing his experiences to prove that there is hope for those dealing with addiction.

But Guy credits Gabor Maté, who was his physician during recovery, with helping him address his traumas and giving him a platform to heal.

Homelessness, Addiction, and Recovery with Guy Felicella | ethno. forum 005

ethno. 2023-01-20 | Guy Felicella spent nearly 20 years living on the streets of Vancouver’s notorious Downtown Eastside (DTES). He survived through the HIV/AIDS crisis in the DTES in the 80’s & 90’s, two decades of being homeless, multiple life-threatening bone infections, and six drug overdoses during which he needed to be resuscitated.

With the help of others through harm reduction and recovery fields and incredible self determination, Guy escaped the grips of the turmoil that kept him suffering. Today he works for Vancouver Coastal Health and the BC Centre on Substance Use advocating on the importance of harm reduction and recovery for those struggling with addiction.

Guy is also an international public speaker who shares his personal experience & expertise at conferences, seminars, & TEDx Talks, school districts and post-secondary institutions where he speaks about drug addiction, trauma, recovery, and harm reduction. He currently has nearly a decade of recovery and sobriety under his belt, and resides with his wife and three young children.

Vancouvers Iconic Video Store Closes

ethno. 2022-07-16 | We caught up with Black Dog Video owner Darren Gay in his final weeks before closing his video store of 25 years.

A staple in the neighbourhood, Darren founded the store as an alternative to the mainstream and (in his words) dire selection that major chains like Blockbuster had to offer back in the day.

In recent years, with streaming services cornering the market and COVID indiscriminately having a negative effect on small business, it became no longer feasible for Darren to keep his shop.

He discusses why he got into film in the first place, his legacy in the local neighbourhood, and his views on where film culture is headed in the years to come.

The Man Who Cycled Across North America

ethno. 2022-06-17 | In 1970, Brock Tully was playing football at the University of British Columbia while grappling with suicidal thoughts and battling addiction to drugs and alcohol. He decided to bicycle across North America in order to invigorate some needed change into his life - a decision he credits with ultimately saving his life.

The man who cycled across North America.

Life as a Canadian Paralympic Snowboarder

ethno. 2022-03-04 | After losing his leg below the knee to osteogenic sarcoma at the age of 10, John Leslie went on to join Team Canada as a Paralympic snowboarder and compete in the Paralympic Games in Sochi 2014 & Pyeongchang in 2018.

He has since retired from professional competition, but we caught up with him to hear his story and talk about what his future looks like outside of professional sport.

Why I Tried to Take My Life

ethno. 2021-04-03 | Bradley Braich is baller at heart who has overcome more than just your typical loss on the basketball court. He also survived his attempted suicide. Thankfully, he’s still here to tell his story, and encourage others struggling with mental illness to just hold on.

An Introduction to Forum | ethno.

ethno. 2020-12-04 | While the word has multiple connotations, in Ancient Greek the word ethnos meant tribe, nation, or something like - a band of people living together.

For us, the name ethno. refers to the latter. A collection of people, voices, art, perspective, all housed under one roof.

We conceived of the brand as a way to showcase local stories and experiences that we felt could speak to our audience in relevant and meaningful ways. We launched in early 2020, our goal being to produce original content that offered unique perspective on individuals from within our communities.

This podcast will be no different. This podcast is about the people you have heard about, the ones you haven’t, and everyone in between.

ethno. 2020-04-07 | Put together using audio from one of Alan Watts' lectures on "nothingness," and somewhat repurposed for these strange times.

It was strange and slightly uncomfortable seeing empty streets and boarded up windows in some of what are usually the busiest parts of downtown Vancouver - but murals painted on boarded up windows provided some semblance of hope and community.
Along with everyone, we have had to entirely reevaluate our plan of action and envision a new path forward as a team. While our path changes, our intentions do not, and we look forward to providing you with some purposeful content in the weeks and months to come. We hope everyone is staying well and healthy during all of this. Much love to all healthcare workers.
