How to Make a Leather Sheath for a Hunting Knife - Leatherwork Red Smith 2025-04-27 | This one is a part of a bigger project. Only one element of an ensemble I'll be completing in upcomings weeks. Something people call Real Life Cosplay. In a few words, it means making something inspired from a fictionnal character, but with real materials and usable in real life. So, this week, I'm making a leather sheath for this very cheap knife I bought online.I used 4mm vegtan leather, brown leather dye, neatsfoot oil, a little bit of antique finish and Tan-Kote to finish the sheath. I could have used thinner leather but as the blade is 4mm thick, it was the best fit to make a usable sheath. I also decided to tool two leaves, just to break the simple and plain look of it. How To Make A Middle Earth Leather Map From Lord of The Rings - Leatherwork Red Smith 2024-11-27 | For a very long time, I wanted to make a leather map of Middle Earth. My wife is a huge fan of J.R.R. Tolkien, has all the books, and we are both big fans of the movies. So I decided to use my new Creality Falcon 2 Pro to make here a Christmas gift in advance.For this one, I used sheepskin, brown leather dye, neatsfoot oil, a little bit of antique finish and Tan-Kote to finish the map. I found the file of the map months back on the internet. Not everything was ready for engraving, like the roads, the shore lines or the trees, so I had to modify it quite a bit and I removed most of the cities and small details that was too small to appear on leather. A few weeks back, my friend Rasmus and I decided to do a collab. He would forge four blacksmith knives (two big and two small) and I would make the sheaths for them.If you don't know Rasmus, he's a very talented Norwegian blacksmith, living near Olso. We've known each other for a few years and also did a podcast together with the Nerd Inventor for three years, so this collaboration was to be expected at some point. I encourage you to check Rasmus's socials here:Youtube: youtube.com/c/rasmusloenInsta: instagram.com/rasmusloen/?hl=enWebsite: https://loensmed.no/I received the knives made from 80CrV2 steel by Rasmus during summer, and the challenge for me was to make two different sheath patterns with a belt loop and engrave a different design on each sheath with in mind the different styles of nordic eras and decorations. I took the time to think about two original designs for the sheaths with also the idea of making each sheath unique.So for this tutorial, I made two patterns, one protecting the entirety of the knife and one showing the curle of the blacksmith knife. I also create two original designs for the big ones, in the Ringerike and Jellinge style. For the small knives, I decided to engrave the Hell of Awe and the Troll Cross, two nordic symbols that bring protection and serenity, strike fear into your enemy's heart and also keep trolls away...The long knives are 22cm overall with a 10cm blade. The small ones are 16cm with a 7cm blade. How To Make A Leather Belt By Hand- Leatherworking Red Smith 2024-09-22 | For a long time, I wanted to show how to make a simple leather belt by hand. But I also wanted to make it special. Unlike the ones that are not stitched on the sides and have an original tip shape, I decided to go with an easy tutorial, but make the belt unique by adding the hand stitching of colored thread.In this build along video, I used 3.8mm/9-10 oz thick premium black leather and a40mm nickel buckle. This is a really simple way to make a DIY leather belt, and you don't even need to add the stitching on the sides if you don't want to. It looked so cool, I wanted to learn how to make one, so I did. How to Make a Real Orlog Game from Assassins Creed Valhalla in Real Life - DIY Full Tutorial Red Smith 2023-02-16 | For as long as I've been playing Assassin's Creed Valhalla, I've been wanting to make my own Orlog game. After a few months of preparation, I was actually able to do it this week.I started by turning two padauk bowls. It's been a long time since I turned some wood, and even if I lack technic and skills, it was really fun to see these bowls appear little by little. I used #180, #240, #320, #400, #600, #800, #1200 and #1600 grit sand paper to get a smooth finish and applied two coats of boiled lindseed oil.Then I design all the parts on Illustrator, and used images of the Gods found on the internet to great the God favours. I engrave 5mm birch plywood to create them and the tokens. Engraving the dices was a little bit trickier so I made a simple jig to be able to position the dices precisely everytime.Now my son and I can play Orlog together and we're both super happy with how the game turned out.Thanks for watching the video, I hope you'll like it. How To Make Eivors Leather Quiver from The Game Assassins Creed Valhalla - Leatherworking Red Smith 2022-12-04 | I've been playing Assassin's Creed Valhalla for a few months now and I really wanted to make Eivor's leather quiver. I think the design is fantastic and fits perfectly with all the things I love about leatherwork. And Eivor is one of my favorite character from the ASC universe. I started by creating the pattern on Illustrator, then assembled it, and taped it to 2.3mm/6oz vegetable tanned leather. I puched all the holes and then cut all the parts.I used transfer paper to recreate the design and transfered it to leather using warm watter and a tracing tool. I cut the leather with my swivel knife and tooled it with bevellers of different sizes. When the leather was dry, I dued it using wated based brown leather dye. I let it dry overnight and painted the silver parts. Then I applied two coats of neatsfoot oil, and burnished the edges with a mix of Tokonole and water. For the final assembly, I used a 3mm brown leather strap and 5mm coton rope.Don't hesitate to purchase the pattern if you want to create your own.You can find the pattern here: redsmithleatherwork.comI hope you'll like this video. How to Make a 3D Printed Chess Set with Leather Board - DIY - Leatherworking Red Smith 2022-09-22 | Since I got my Elegoo Resin 3D printer, I had in mind to make myself a new chess set. Because I just love the game, even if it doesn't love me.To make the board, I used a 1.2mm/3oz white chrome tanned goat hide, some water based yellow and purple leather dye. I purchased all the files for these beautiful chess pieces here: myminifactory.com/object/3d-print-dragon-chess-the-complete-set-194263 I reduced the size of the pieces by 1.27 and used my Elegoo Mars 2 Pro with Jayo UV 405nm black and white Resin, washed the parts with isopropyl alcohol, cured all the parts with my Elegoo Mercury, appliied one coat of black and white Vallejo surface primer and two coats of black and white Vallejo Game Air paint. I should probably have applied a wash once all the pieces were ready, to give them a "proper" model look but I liked the black and white, and usually let things age naturally. How to Make a Hip Flask Leather Sleeve #2 - Leatherworking Red Smith 2022-01-14 | I've been wanting to make hip flask sleeves for a very long time. Somehow I was thinking that in order to make one, I needed a lot of tools and/or fancy equipment, or a very specific design.Then I realised I could just make my own, with the tools I already have and in my own style.So I decided to make one. Then I made another one. And then a third one. Each time, I changed the style of the leather sleeve, and also the technique used to make it or to stitch it.This video is the second one of a series of three in which I show the different styles and techniques you can use to make you own.In this video called "the laser engraver way", I've used 1mm/3oz vegetable tanned leather and my newly acquired laser engraver. I wanted a "western/saloon" look for this flask, something very different than the first one which was more fancy and clean. How To Make A Kukri Knife From An Old Rusty Tool - Blacksmithing Red Smith 2021-06-30 | This week, I decided to make a Kukri Knife From An Old Rusty Tool. I know some of you don't want to see old tools being destroyed, but I prefere to reforge this tool and give it another life rather than letting it rust in the shed and never use it again. I found this old, rusty, dull, useless billhook in the shop. I believe my grandmother was using it to cut stuff in her garden a few decades ago. But I have no use for it, and I wanted to turn it into something I like, something I'll keep, and something that reminds me of her. So I decided to reforge it into a Kukri knife. After annealing the blade, I reforge it to straighten it and give it the rough shape of a Kukri. Then I ground it to shape, normalised it (off camera), quenched it in oil and tempered it. When the blade was cleaned, I used Wenge to make the handle and shaped it with my belt grinder. A little bit of two part epoxy, three brass pins and some boiled linseed oil and it was all ready to use. Restoring my old bow and making a target stand Red Smith 2021-05-15 | I found my old bow I used 25 years ago and decided to put it back in shoot order. After a quick painting, I made a custom grip for the riser and added all the missing parts. Then I made a double target stand so my son and & I can shoot together.It was a lot of fun to refurbish this old bow and I'm super happy with the result. Now I can practice again. Making A Leatherworking Skiving Knife From Scratch - Knifemaking Red Smith 2021-04-28 | This week, I made a sharp thing. I needed a skiving knife for my leatherwork and after checking the models and prices online, I decided to make my own. It was a lot cheaper and quicker to make my own. Plus, I designed it so it fits my hand perfectly and it is very confortable to use.I made so it would go nicely with my big leatherworking round knife I made a few months ago. I used 3mm thick XC75/1075 High Carbon Steel, 2mm brass plate and walnut scales. How to Make a Breath of the Wild Travelers Shield Leather Backpack - Full Tutorial - Leatherworking Red Smith 2021-03-31 | After celebrating my son's birthday on the theme of The Legend of Zelda - Breath Of The Wild, I decided to make him the traveler's shield. But, I thought it would even be cooler if I made him a backpack shaped as a shield, in which he could store his Link's costume.I cut a big piece of 2mm veg tan cow leather, wet the leather with warm water, and embossed the design of the shield. Once both sides of shield were fully dry, I was able to dye it used water based leather dye and water based silver and gold for the boss and the rim of the shield. I applied two coats of neatsfoot oil and two coats of Super Shene leather finish on all parts and it was done (after a lot of stitching).I'm super happy with the result, and as you'll see in the video, my son is as well :)If you liked the video, don't hesitate to like, comment and share. How to Make a Leather Map Of The Kingdom of Hyrule from The Legend of Zelda - Breath of the Wild Red Smith 2021-02-28 | Hello everyone! I really hope you're doing great. My son's birthday is coming up very soon, so I've decided to make him a Leather map of Hyrule to go with the game The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild he'll be receiving.I decided to use a map I found on the internet. After drawing all the map onto a leathercraft tracing paper, I cut a big piece of 2.5mm veg tan cow leather, wet the leather with warm water, and embossed the whole map making sure to have all the details I wanted for the kiddo. Once the map was fully dry, I was able to color it used alcohol based leather dye. I used some blue, yellow, orange, red, green, black, brown and mahogany dye. Then, I used a brown color pen to highlight all the roads and applied two coats of neatsfoot oil.Making an embossed leather map is a very long process, but it's also very rewarding and quite a relaxing process. Choosing the right map is very important for the final result and I have to say I'm really happy with how the map turned out.As a big fan of The Legend of Zelda games, I had a lot of fun making this map. How to Make A Leather Tooled Guitar Strap With .pdf Pattern - Leatherworking Red Smith 2020-12-19 | You can find the pattern and more here: redsmithleatherwork.comI started playing the guitar when I was 7. I started with a classical guitar and after a few years of lesson, I shifted to an electric guitar in Highschool. My parents bought me a cheap electric guitar for my 16th birthday and two years leather, I worked an entire summer to be able to buy myself a real Gibson SG, just like the one Angus Young was using. No need to say that my kind of music that I play or like has really been influenced by AC/DC.So this week I made a leather guitar strap for my dear SG. I used 2.5mm/6oz veg tan leather. I tooled the first layer with a background stamp, cut the second layer, dyed the parts black and red with alcohol based leather dye. Once it was all dry, I applied two coats of leather oil, burnished the edges with gum tragacanth and two coats of Eco-Flo super shine. Then I stitched the two layers together with red polyester waxed thread. I added two round rivets to hold the last part and it was done. I thought it would be interesting to unbox, assemble and test this new machine and compare it to my Ender 3 pro.The machine worked perfectly well but I decided to change the SD card right away, as I know by experience that they are not always good quality and can cause trouble with the prints.I mostly used Sunlu marble PLA filament. How to Make a Leather Tool Belt With .pdf Pattern - Leatherworking Red Smith 2020-06-15 | Link to the .pdf pattern file: redsmithleatherwork.com/product-page/leather-holster-pattern-videoFor quite some time now, I wanted to make a tool holster & belt for my maker friend Ellen @Crafts With Ellen She works with all kind of material but she's also a very talented seamstress. I thought that a leather tool belt for her sewing tools would help her whilst she works on a project. So here it is.I used 2.5mm/6oz vegetable tanned leather for the front and back and 2mm/5oz veg tan leather for the inner layers and the pouches. I cut all the pieces, punched all the holes for rivets and snaps, beveled all the edges and light sanded them as well. Then I wet the leather to put a groove around all the parts, 3mm from the edge. Once the leather was fully dry, I dyed all the parts black, applied two coats of neatsfoot oil and rubbed all the parts with a clean cotton rag and some Eco-Flo super shene.Once all the parts were fully prepared, I was able to stitch the bottom of the pouches and the parts together and assemble them using 8mm snaps and rivets. I also used two 28mm swivel snaps, two 20mm D rings, a 20mm buckle and a 30mm belt buckle. I really enjoyed creating the piece and making the pattern available for you. Knife Making Tool - Building A Wire Brush And Buffing Wheel Station from Scraps Red Smith 2020-04-10 | When I can't buy a tool, I usually try to make my own. And I wanted a wire brush/buffing wheel station, so I decided to make one. Finding scraps took me a long time but I finally managed to find an electric motor in good condition with a double axe and a stand for the station. The motor is a 220V, 1,5 HP, 3000 RPM.I started by taking the motor apart and check everything. Only one wire was in bad condition. I cleaned it and repainted it, then fix the wires and connections. Once it was done, I applied two coats of Hammerite dark grey hammer effect paint. I then cleaned the stand, and also had to grind the bad welds a little bit. Once it was all done, I apply one coat of light grey hammer effect paint.I bought a wire brush wheel and a buffing wheel for 20 euros each. All I needed at this point was a way to mount the wheels on the motor. Forged EDC Knife And Leather Sheath - Full Build Red Smith 2020-03-29 | A few months ago, my friend Rasmus Loen gave me a beautiful hand forged blade. And I love it and wanted to make a handle to compliment the blade. That's probably why I pushed this project for too long. Plus making a true tang handle was a first for me. But I think it turned out pretty well. Here is a link to Rasmus' channel: youtube.com/channel/UCI6beecdfBlVrEw8s_A_XqgI used walnut and pad auk wood (thanks Dan!!) with some 1mm brass in between, and a piece of 2mm brass to put between the blade and the handle. I had to cut the tang of the blade because all my drill bits were too short to drill deep enough in the blank.Then I made a leather sheath for the knife. I wanted to make it simple but also add a custom touch to it, to go with the padauk and oak handle I made for it. So I decided to make a very simple sheath, wet form it for this specific knife and add a second red piece of leather around the sheath, just to make it look nicer. I started by tracing the pattern and cutting the pieces. Then I bevelled the edges, wet the parts to trace the inner lines and punched the holes. Once it was done, I used my groover to cut two lines inside the sheath, so the leather would bend more easily. I dyed the leather using water based leather dye (brown and red) and apply a first coat of neatsfoot oil once it was completely dry.Then it was time to stitch the parts together and close the sheath. I started the wet forming of the sheath. I poured warm water inside the sheath then dripped the sheath in the water for a few seconds. I protected the knife with wrapping paper and apply little pression on the leather to form it around the knife. I let it dry completely before I finished the burnishing of the edges and applied a second coat of neatsfoot oil. How To Make A Simple Leather Knife Sheath - Leatherworking Red Smith 2020-03-27 | I wanted to make a leather sheath to protect my EDC forged knife (youtube.com/watch?v=s6hFBqZMNSA&t=281s) and I wanted to make it simple but also add a custom touch to it, to go with the padauk and oak handle I made for it. So I decided to make a very simple sheath, wet form it for this specific knife and add a second red piece of leather around the sheath, just to make it look nicer. I started by tracing the pattern and cutting the pieces. Then I bevelled the edges, wet the parts to trace the inner lines and punched the holes. Once it was done, I used my groover to cut two lines inside the sheath, so the leather would bend more easily. I dyed the leather using water based leather dye (brown and red) and apply a first coat of neatsfoot oil once it was completely dry.Then it was time to stitch the parts together and close the sheath. I started the wet forming of the sheath. I poured warm water inside the sheath then dripped the sheath in the water for a few seconds. I protected the knife with wrapping paper and apply little pression on the leather to form it around the knife. I let it dry completely before I finished the burnishing of the edges and applied a second coat of neatsfoot oil. Forged EDC Knife - Knife Making Red Smith 2020-03-08 | A few months ago, my friend Rasmus Loen gave me a beautiful hand forged blade. And I love it and wanted to make a handle to compliment the blade. That's probably why I pushed this project for too long. Plus making a true tang handle was a first for me. But I think it turned out pretty well. How to Make BD-1 From Star Wars Jedi: Survivor - Prop Making Red Smith 2020-02-23 | The other day, my son came to me and asked: "Dad, can we build a robot and make a video together?" How could I say no to that. So we decided to 3D print a robot and then finish it together. We started by searching for a cool looking robot on thingiverse and we decided to go for BD-1 from Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. Here is the link to the file we used: thingiverse.com/thing:4078727We printed all the parts on my Ender 3 pro. After a quick check, I realised it was not absolutely perfect so I used super glue, body filler and mastic spray to smooth all the parts and close some gaps. After some sanding and fine tuning of the legs, we were ready to assemble the body and the head. Then we painted all the parts white, then added the red, silver-grey and black.All the build went pretty smoothly. I wanted to add some electronic in the head to put some LEDs and lights but Little Red wanted his robot to be done as soon as possible so we decided to go for the simplest version of BD-1. I also wanted to do some weathering but as it was a gift from my son, I respected his decision to "keep it clean'. In the end, BD-1 turned out great even if it's not perfect. I really like the look of it and my son is super happy, which to me, is the most important. I personally had a great time building it with my son and I think he did it too. This was my first 3D printed project and I'm sure I've made a lot of mistakes (like painting the parts after assembly) but I also learnt a lot and I'm sure I'll make more in the future.I hope you'll like the video. Vintage Sewing Machine Restoration - Old Tool Restoration Red Smith 2020-02-13 | A few weeks ago, I found this old Pfaff 145 industrial sewing machine in a garage sell. It was in pretty bad shape as the table was broken in several places, the feet covered in rust, the hook mechanism was off, and so many other things. But I got a pretty good deal on it, so I bought it, brought it home and decided to restore it.I bought it for my leatherwork and upcoming projects. It's a real beast with can sew leather up to 20oz/8mm (two layers of 10oz/4mm) at least, so I've been told. I didn't try it yet, but I will.It started by taking it apart, cleaning everything, removing the rust and giving the feet and the table mechanism a new paint job. The machine itself wasn't in bad condition but needed oil desperately and fine tuning so it can work again properly. I mainly worked on the table and all the accessories to make them rust-free and look nice once again. I use hammer effect metal paint. The motor is a Singer 240V, 2850 rpm, 1/2HP. For extra safety, I checked all the wiring and added an extra breaker (to protect the machine from overload and the kid from trying to use it).I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. I really like it now and I'm sure it will serve me well in the coming years for so many projects I have in mind. I'm pretty sure you will see "the beast" in my future videos as well.
