How to Make Gorgeous Rusty Papers Book and Paper Arts 2025-06-07 | Today I am going to show a technique for making rusty papers that is easy and inexpensive. These papers can then be used for journal pages, cardmaking, collage backgrounds, fodder, or other mixed media projects. I know rust isn’t for everyone but I am attracted to it so much as a kind of wild mark making that suggests something old and used by time and in this there are stories and mystery and I love it. *******If you would like to support this channel you can contribute at Ko-Fi here. You can also use card or fabric and I will be showing this with fabric in a few days.• Steel wool from the hardware or DIY store• Optional: a maskSoak your papers for an hour or longer in a 50-50 solution of vinegar and water. Make bundles of layers of vinegar-soaked papers and steel wool. Make sure the paper is wet then put something heavy over it and weight it down. Turn the bundle over every couple of hours. You can also make rolled bundles and wrap them in cling wrap or other plastic bag. If you don’t have vinegar try tea or just plain water to see what effects you get.Check for results after about five hours or leave longer. Overnight is good. Then take off the cling wrap and let the bundle air dry while still bundled. Unwrap. Remove steel wool and save for your next batch. Rinse well in cool water. Iron your papers if you like. Use in journals or what-you-will!

Altered Book Layout B&W plus Free Vintage Printables 🌷 Book and Paper Arts 2025-01-30 | It's always a treat to work in my ongoing altered book and today I made a new layout in glorious black and white. Today I am using French pages from a military notebook, roses from an 1870 edition of The Girl's Own Paper, a folio from a Welsh hymnal 1867, and a cheeky bird from a nature guide 1913. From Paper Scraps to Paper Scrolls and Fodder for Journal Pages Book and Paper Arts 2025-01-18 | Today I have a look at how to make patchwork paper scrolls made from paper scraps. Starting from simply scraps, I will show step-by-step, from blank backing paper, to the patchwork, and then to adding texture, layer, and depth with a variety of mixed media techniques including stencils, splatters, and drizzles. Then the scroll is attached to a spool or sticks and that’s it! The paper scroll can then be display or unrolled and used as fodder in your journals and other work. Make Paste Paper Art Papers Book and Paper Arts 2024-08-03 | Today we are going to make paste papers, a paper decorating technique that dates from the 1600s. While it could be used to make everything from playing cards to wallpaper, it was most commonly used for bookbinding as endpapers and covers. Today's papers can be used for traditional book projects. They can also be used as art papers for collage backgrounds, as collage fodder, for cardmaking, and to be bound or glued into a multitude of different journals projects.Materials• You will need homemade paste. Wheat paste will work as will wallpaper paste. I am using paste made from cornflour (corn starch). The ratio is 2 parts cornflour to 8 parts water. For added colourfastness add a ½ teaspoon of alum as a mordant. To see a video on how to make, it's here:youtube.com/watch?v=hguEvBFZDyM&t=81s• Add colour with acrylic paints. They can be cheap; there is no need to use fine art quality paints here.• Apply with broad brushes and decorate with a variety of combs, cards, and found objects.
