In this free live session, learn how this hands-on activity reveals molecular targets of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes. Using a cell-free system with fluorescent readouts, students will study the effect of two antibiotics on bacterial protein synthesis. Students will also examine how resistance genes act in an antibiotic-specific manner. This laboratory exercise promotes a detailed understanding of antibiotic mechanisms and bacterial resistance.

New feature! The P51 can now run on a 9 V battery or electric power via a USB-C port.
With P51™, you can detect and measure molecules like DNA in a simple, visual way. Scientists use fluorescence every day to detect and quantify DNA, RNA, and proteins, but it often requires sophisticated and complex equipment. With P51™, we’ve packaged the power to visualize molecules into a compact, cheap, handheld format that’s perfect for any setting.
Using P51™, students of all ages can directly visualize the fundamental molecules of life in action. For example, you can watch as DNA forms a double helix and then unwinds. Or you can see enzymes process a substrate. In doing so, P51™ brings affordable, accessible activities to areas of the biology curriculum where there weren’t any before.

Session title: SynBio workforce preparedness: training the next generation during a pandemic
Session description: The COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting transition to remote learning at home has greatly interrupted a student's ability and motivation to learn. To grow the future of the synthetic biology workforce and bioeconomy, we must find strategies to maintain biology education and inspire students to pursue these career paths through hands-on experiential learning that can be performed at home. There have been many advances in recent years in the synthetic biology space around accessible tools and resources that can be translated into hands-on learning activities, and this breakout session will allow people to share, learn, and discuss how these resources can be applied to at-home learning for students.
