In this video, I complete my year long journey to 3D print a proper, compact, high performance liquid piston engine. The design uses no valves, only ports and the alignment of the rotor to control airflow in and out of the chambers. And you bet I got it working this time around.
I also improve my dynamometer setup to collect data at higher engine speeds, and I'm able to successfully run all 4 engines on the setup to compare peak performance as well as get a vague idea of efficiency.

Is it possible? I have no idea, but it sure won't stop me from trying. You may be surprised at just how quick it can get. Create a free Onshape account here: https://Onshape.pro/3DPrintedLife
In this video, I begin work on the core of my 100 dart per second nerf gun. The concept uses a rapidly spinning magazine to feed darts into a custom belt drive system and propel the darts forward. In this video, I fire up to 8 darts at a maximum rate of 50/second, but it should only take a little more development to turn this into 80 darts at 100/second. It's going to be insane, that is guaranteed.
Also, new logo and branding! Let me know what you think in the comments.

While this project didn't quite generate enough power to sustain itself, it certainly has the potential to. All it needs is properly designed blades that are a bit larger, and a higher gear ratio to spin the stepper motor generating the power quicker. With that, this prototype is a great demonstration piece as to how full-scale wind turbines actually operate. Is this how all small turbines should be designed? Definitely not. Simpler is better unless the efficiency gains are substantial, and the scale needs to be quite a bit larger before that holds true!

This time on 3DprintedLife, I build a ridiculously powerful robot arm. Capable of lifting 5lbs at full extension. But I didn't build a full arm, just most of it. 5 Axes to be exact, with the 6th coming soon! Then I strap on my phone and film some stuff using the robot. This video has it all; 3D printing, harmonic drives, custom electronics, breaking stuff, fixing stuff, and breaking it again.
If you'd like to build this project yourself, you can find the files here. (I would highly recommend waiting for the re-design unless you know what you're doing) github.com/DDeGonge/OS-ARM

Liquid Piston (not a Wankel) prototyping, and building a custom dynamometer. Oh boy! Today's video is all about the first few months of prototyping my 3D printed, Liquid Piston Rotary engine. This is an alternate rotary engine design to the Wankel and features an impressive power to size ratio, plus a design that is easier to seal. While I made some great progress, the engine isn't self-sufficient just yet, but it is close!
Additionally, I built a dynamometer so I can measure the performance of all 4 of my air engines (Tom Stanton's OG design, my original Wankel, Integza's Wankel, and the new Liquid Piston). Each of these engines has it's own strengths and weaknesses, so it will be super interesting to quantify the performance of each.

Use my link bit.ly/3AWwoJg and check out the first chapter of any DataCamp course for free! This is my built from scratch 2D stroboscope display. It uses 8 miniature solenoid valves outfit with custom 3D printed solenoid heads, UV fluid and leds, and a whole lot of code to create incredibly cool animations floating in space.
I had a lot of fun working on this project, and learned more than I expected about fluid control. If people enjoy this project, the next step is to turn things up to 11 and both improve the control of each individual solenoid for better accuracy, and add another dimension so this display can work in 3D.

This video was sponsored by DataCamp.Building a Digital Magnetic Levitation Platform!3DprintedLife2021-09-09 | Remember, failure is always an option. A huge thank you to PCBWay for sponsoring this video! See more here: http://pcbway.com
As it happens, building a repulsive magnetic levitation platform from scratch with minimal knowledge on the subject beforehand makes things quite difficult...
The goal of this project was to replicate the performance of the cheap, off-the-shelf magnetic levitation platforms, but with a twist. Rather than using an analog circuit to control the magnet, I would use a digital one. This should give me way more knobs to turn and, if I could get it working, would mean I have so much more freedom to determine exactly how and where I want the magnet to float.
Unfortunately, I never did get it working well enough to see how that theory stood up. But I did still make some magnets dance in some fun ways! Plus I learned a lot along the way, and isn't that what it's all about?!

A huge thank you to PCBWay for sponsoring this video! See more here: http://pcbway.com
Eventually this arm will be filming my B-Roll for me, so there will be plenty more updates as the development continues! This arm uses my harmonic drive from a previous video, and a lot of work has gone in to ensure this arm is not only cheap and powerful, but looks great too. It should end up costing around $500 total, have a working range of 500+mm, and be capable of carrying 1kg with ease. It wont be super fast, and it wont be super accurate, but it will be an excellent camera minion.
The project is open sourced! Find the WIP files here. I do not recommend attempting to recreate this project yet, I still have a lot of work to do and I will document the parts needed in better detail once the design is ready for others to make. github.com/DDeGonge/OS-ARM

#3dprintedlife #robot #harmonicdriveBuilding a 3D Printed Wankel Powered Paddleboat3DprintedLife2021-05-30 | Using Integza's compressed air powered wankel engine, I built an old-fashioned paddleboat. But because I over-do everything, I also designed a 3D printed air regulator to significantly increase engine runtime, and I learned how to run CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) analyses in order to over-optimize my hull and paddle design. The CFD was definitely overkill, but it was fun to learn and really cool to see how minor design changes can significantly impact fluid dynamics.

#3dprintedlife #wankel #rotaryMy 3D Printed Harmonic Drive is Surprisingly Powerful!3DprintedLife2021-05-02 | This is my 3D printed harmonic drive (strain wave gearbox). It's easily capable of 10NM torque output and has surprisingly little backlash and deflection even under extreme loads. It may not be metal, but the performance is surprising! It's low profile, durable, and can be used in a few different configurations. And best of all, it's super cheap! The gearbox itself is less than $20, and then just add the price of a stepper to drive it!

#3dprintedlife #gearbox #harmonicdrive3D Printing a Functional Wankel Engine3DprintedLife2021-03-07 | Meet my FDM 3D printed, compressed air powered wankel/rotary engine. This project was a huge challenge which pushed my mechanical design skills to the max, but the result is really neat. Even if it may be less efficient than just about any other compressed air engine around.
The engine relies almost entirely on FDM printed parts with minimal post-processing after printing. O-rings are attached to some surfaces to act as sealing surfaces and other smaller o-rings are embedded into the engine housing during assembly for the valves. The engine runs on compressed air, minimum of about 40psi. All of the clips in this video used only 1L of air for the supply, a bigger tank would result in far longer run times.
What did you think of the new video style, with more of an engineering and education focus than previously? Please let me know in the comments!

It does this using a raspberry pi and pi camera as the brains of the operation to identify and track targets, which communicates with an adafruit feather on a custom breakout board running custom firmware (seeing a theme here?) which controls the stepper motors and servo. Fun fact, tuning PID loops isn't fun, especially when there's some software bugs sprinkled in!
