Slinging - More efficient throwing with a high wind-up IronGoober 2024-05-22 | If you see where my hand goes on the wind up, it is low in the first throw and progressively higher, where I'm trying to get my hand up and behind my head before I start the power stroke (acceleration of the projectile). The third throw looks more efficient (and is!). This is because I have lengthened the power stroke, or lengthened the distance over which I am applying maximum force to the projectile. This is why it gets more speed.

Slinging at lake for Distance IronGoober 2022-10-03 | This is video is mostly for my reference, but in case anyone else wanted to see some distance throws, I put it up.Chuckin' stones with a 1m long sling. Just past the first patch of lakeweed was 300m (i.e. "the white dots" which were a couple of rocks sticking out of the water). The second throw was the best distance, I'm guessing 320-330m. It has 7.6 second of hang time. This corresponds (most likely) to a sub-optimal release angle of about 35°, which is consistent with what I've seen from my throws previously. Simple trajectory models show that an optimal release angle of ~40° should get about 9 seconds of hang time and another 10 - 20 meters of distance. These were egg shaped stones ~42g each.Again, this video just demonstrates that with distance slinging, speed is not king, air-resistance is king. Minimizing it, somehow, is the best way to get distance.

300m! 160mph sling throw (72m/s), 75g stone IronGoober 2022-07-26 | I found a stone at 302m. I think this was the throw that put it there.
FX Chronograph testing - Sling velocities 65 m/s (146 mph) IronGoober 2022-06-27 | I use a 34" sling (2mm UHMWPE, aka dyneema and leather) and 50-60g stones (weighed).After the first throw, I thought I heard (187)...but it said 137. So that gives me more confidence this thing is correct.Also, I ranged it, it's 250-260 m across the lake and a 22m drop (elevation loss).Update: A side by side comparision with the Pocket Radar showed that they were within 2 mph of each other with a thrown tennis ball (~60mph) and within about 3mph when I was slinging a tennis ball over the top of them (~105 mph). I'm satisfied this radar is accurate within 1 m/s.
