A long-time ally of Julius Caesar, Calenus was a capable new man who earned his consulship through the many services he rendered unto Caesar. However, his most important contributions came in the wake of the Ides of March, when he squared off against Cicero to determine the Senate's stance as the tensions between Antony and the Assassins mounted. Calenus tried to chart a middle course and although he failed to do this, he still impacted the debate in the Senate and won the gratitude of Antony, thus making him one of the power players in the early days of the Second Triumvirate. His death in early 40 was also significant, as he held a major command and his numerous legions went over to Octavian when he passed away.
