JUST in time for the New Year!!! Our final "2024" installment of the Restoration project, an album that recently had its 44th anniversary, the Flash Gordon soundtrack âĄ
Have had this one basically finished for a good chunk of the year. All that needed doing was the tracking, which I finally completed last night! Spared no expense (time-wise) to make sure it was no less accurate than any other CD release ð
This is another one of those cases where NO digital releases to this point have done this album justice. Even in its best form (the original UK vinyl pressing), it's not an amazing sounding album tbh, it certainly makes for a more pleasurable listening experience either way ð
Not only do the tracks have that little more "oomph", but there's actually moments where detail in the high end is audible now ð I know this isn't everyone's favourite album, but at least in my case, it's converted me from not being keen to listen at all, to actually being somewhat willing every so often ð
Wishing you all the best New Year imaginable ðð Looking forward to completing this series hopefully early into 2025, and maybe sharing additional bits and pieces here and there as the year goes on ð

Truth be told, I started work on this installment exactly 1 year ago, and its been on and off since then while working around life and making sure deadlines were met for the other installments. The day I decided to take this album on, I quickly realized a few days wouldnt be nearly enough time to whip it up ð
Id say its one of the biggest tests of patience Ive ever assigned myself.
Now, if only the end result was an indication of how much work was involved. Sadly, I dont think thatll be the case, as this album isnt exactly known for having stellar sound. On the other hand though, the idea that you likely wont notice anything out of the ordinary may just be the best case scenario for me. Again, check out the comparison video to understand what Im talking about. The raw source I opted to use for this album wouldve given you every reason to notice something out of the ordinary...
While this album doesnt exactly qualify as an audiophiles masterpiece, the finished project has finally made me understand why owners of the original UK vinyl rave about this album so much. If you have a good sound system on hand, oh boy, youre in for an experience! Not a polite mix in the slightest, but its full of character, the use of stereo trickery is quite something, and the bass and kick drum certainly makes their presence felt!!!
That experience is no longer exclusive to those who own the UK 1st pressing LP. For the first time ever, we can all enjoy it the way its supposed to sound, in digital form ð Hope you all have fun with this one ð

A Night At The Opera is now 49 years old ðąðĶĒ Ive been immensely excited to share this installment with you! Its one of the rare occasions where 3 different editions are on offer, simply because were spoiled for choice when it comes to the amount of great-sounding releases the albums had over the years.
Despite the amount of awesome releases, every single digital version has left plenty to be desired in the high end. A problem most vintage pressings never had. I feel like a broken record saying this, but if your ears have never been graced with one of the LPs replicated for the restoration, this may very well offer a new experience for you ð Youll find the album was recorded quite a bit better than digital copies make it out to be...

This year marks 45 years since Queens legendary final night in Argentina ð Its been quoted on multiple occasions by band members and road crew as being one of their all-time best nights on stage ð The atmosphere is up there with any other audience Queen ever had, and the performance is a stunning reflection of that. The attendance is slightly higher than the previous two Buenos Aires shows, due to more people being allowed on the football field. The excitement reaches its peak when Freddie introduces a special guest before Another One Bites The Dust - local hero and international football titan, Diego Maradona â― He gives a few words to the crowd, before handing it back over to the band.
Weve been blessed with multiple audio sources over the years, such as recordings from local radio broadcasts and an awesome audience tape. All sources are incomplete in some fashion, most notably the audience recording. The taper made strategic pauses throughout, to ensure they had enough tape to last til the end. Their plan worked to perfection, as it finally cuts out towards the end of We Are The Champions. Precise cuts were made at the end of almost every song, sometimes lasting until after the next song has already started. Additionally, the back-half of Save Me and the majority of Now Im Here were omitted from the recording. But for the 86 minutes or so that WAS captured, its been the go-to source for this show for many years! The quality is great, helped by the fact it was recorded pretty close to the stage ð
Combined, the radio broadcast sources cover the entire show, apart from the beginning of Keep Yourself Alive. AM was Argentinas primary radio format at the time, which wasnt nearly as capable as FM radio would become. As a result, the quality varies considerably between sources. Musically, the mix itself was excellent! Sounds like it couldve been pulled directly from the soundboard. One unfortunate addition to the mix was a delayed audience mic (otherwise referred to as slapback echo). For a good chunk of the show, this isnt an issue as it was turned down during a lot of the songs. But from roughly the 2nd half of the show onwards, it would creep higher into the mix on certain songs. The worst offenders are Love Of My Life, Crazy Little Thing Called Love, Another One Bites The Dust and We Will Rock You.
Myself and historicman had our work cut out for us with this project! Given the source material, as great as the potential was, it simply was never going to sound perfect. But weve done our best to compile the best elements to create a, dare I say, DEFINITIVE version of the show (as of 2026).
As epic as the audience recording is on its own, the crowd are so electric that it can be difficult to hear the band at times. I had the idea of integrating the higher frequencies from this tape, to essentially enhance the sound of the radio broadcast. The best AM source barely reaches past 7kHz of detail, where as the audience recording comfortably reaches over 10kHz. Thats a considerable improvement!")

Thanks to your votes in the community tab, the 2024 Restoration project is no longer exclusive to Queen! Happy 42nd anniversary to none other than the biggest selling album in the history of the world, THRILLER ðĶð§ââïļ
To any MJ fans who may be here for the first time, WELCOME! The intention of this project is to find the albums best digital source(s), undo all previous remastering work and restore the music to exactly how the artist originally intended to sound! In this case, the USA 1st LP release was our measuring stick, which to this day is still considered by many to be the best-sounding version of Thriller.
No comparisons video this time around sadly! Sharing this installment was a very last minute decision, but the differences shouldnt be too difficult to detect vs existing digital versions of the album. Im sure we all have our preferred ways of listening to this one already ð If anyones unfamiliar on what the project entails, Id recommend checking out one of the comparisons Ive done for Queen to give you a more in-depth look on the process...
Now, a huge hinderance on most digital releases is severely-squashed dynamics. I set out to find the most reversible source to work with, and theres really only a small handful of options I could find without these issues. The original 1983 CD wouldve been a good option, but that release wasnt sourced directly from the masters. To maximize the cleanliness of the sound, I deemed the recent MFSL SACD from 2022 to be our best option here. The fade-ins/outs for each track were already perfect, and any other volume fluctuations between this release and the original were fairly minimal, therefore pretty easy to adjust.
The main component requiring attention was obviously the EQ. It varied between songs, so I couldnt just do an overall adjustment to the whole album in this case. Either way, tending to each track individually to match them up with the LP wasnt a huge hassle in the end. The MFSL source was a real treat to work with, as they made a conscious effort to keep most elements as pure as possible. After the EQ was taken are of, were already done!
To conclude, none of the Michael Jackson albums released in his lifetime are in as desperate need of a digital restoration as Queen (for example). Each of his albums seems to have at least one decent digital version out there! I think Bernie Grundman did a great job remastering this album in 2001 (he mastered the original LP also)! But its the aforementioned brick-walled dynamics holding it back, something which was likely beyond his control. This 2024 Restoration rights those wrongs, and gives Bernies work the justice it deserves! Really excited to be able to bring that same glorious USA vinyl sound over to digital for everyone else to enjoy ð

With the Invincible album, its without question that the original CD release had its drawbacks (soundwise). Issues which directly reflect the time period the album was conceived. And more importantly, issues which tend to hamper our overall experience with this album.
The digital mastering techniques implemented during the late 90s into the early 00s were often very harmful to the music. Excessive brick-walling, unnecessary noise reduction and odd EQ choices intended to suit car stereos and such. Unfortunately, this album was a victim of most, if not all of these traits.
However, the vinyl releases (ignoring the 2018 picture disc) werent restricted to such standards, resulting in a much more pleasurable listening experience overall! Using techniques outlined in the COMPARISON VIDEO (https://youtu.be/CeFle3bHlAQ), Ive set out to bring those positive traits over to the existing digital version for an even cleaner sound ð
The RESULT? Everything sounds much more MJ-like ð Weve uncovered details that went practically unheard on the original! Overflowing with soul and life, it no longer feels separate from everything else hes released ð If youre one of those whove been unimpressed with Invincible based on the existing versions, you NEED to hear it in this state!!! And if youre already a fan of Invincible, you still NEED to hear it in this state!!! ðĨ
To me, THIS form of the album feels more like a continuation of the vision they had for Dangerous, with the benefit of the more modern and mature influences 10 years on. If you listen to the original 1991 CD pressing of Dangerous (which has a similar sonic balance) and then the 2025 Restoration of Invincible, Im sure youll see what I mean...

But for right now, if you caught our Restorations for Queen II and Sheer Heart Attack, your expectations for this one are likely sky high! I better let you know ahead of time that, given the limitations of the mixes and such, the improvements for this album are no where near as drastic Im afraid ðĪ·ââïļ This in addition to the fact that the existing releases were already not too shabby. The original UK vinyl release wasnt plagued with compression like the entirety of Queen II and parts of SHA, so this will be a much more honest reflection of how that original release sounded (which is the point of the project anyway)! BUT, regardless, thanks to the fresher transfers, certain parts of tracks without a doubt sound slightly cleaner on the 2024 Restoration ð

Its a Christmas Miracle ð Just in time for the big day! The Miracle gets the special treatment before I have to start calling them 2025 Restorations ð
Ill be straight forward in saying, if youre expecting as drastic of a result as some of those early albums, this might not be the installment for you. It may very well be the least drastic, but still absolutely a worthwhile addition ð
The original CD for this album did a pretty darn good job at representing these tracks in an accurate light, in comparison to the original (UK) vinyl that is. Its mainly just the difference in depth were addressing here, along a few extra bits and pieces here and there...
And the result edges closer to the kind of balance heard on The Miracle Sessions CD from a couple years back, as well as the 5.1 remixes from the GVH2 DVD ð
The schedule issues Im facing wont be changing anytime soon, so cant guarantee when the next installment is coming. Of course Im hoping itll be sooner rather than later, but who knows ðĪ·ââïļ Anyways, Merry Christmas, and if I dont see you before then, Happy New Year ð

Its a Christmas Miracle ð Just in time for the big day! The Miracle gets the special treatment before I have to start calling them 2025 Restorations ð
Ill be straight forward in saying, if youre expecting as drastic of a result as some of those early albums, this might not be the installment for you. It may very well be the least drastic, but still absolutely a worthwhile addition ð
The original CD for this album did a pretty darn good job at representing these tracks in an accurate light, in comparison to the original (UK) vinyl that is. Its mainly just the difference in depth were addressing here, along a few extra bits and pieces here and there...
And the result edges closer to the kind of balance heard on The Miracle Sessions CD from a couple years back, as well as the 5.1 remixes from the GVH2 DVD ð
The schedule issues Im facing wont be changing anytime soon, so cant guarantee when the next installment is coming. Of course Im hoping itll be sooner rather than later, but who knows ðĪ·ââïļ Anyways, Merry Christmas, and if I dont see you before then, Happy New Year ð

Months and months removed from the last one, were finally back with another Queen-related installment of the 2025 Restoration project ð
Truth be told, I began work on this album well over two years ago, and its been in a near-complete state ever since then. Fast forward to now, Ive finally acquired the final piece of the puzzle needed in order to finish it! Of all things, the missing piece was a more reliable source of Stop All The Fighting, via a variation of the 1993 Great Pretender CD single ðŠ
Like the majority of Queen albums weve covered on the project, Mr. Bad Guy in digital form has always suffered. The original 1985 CD was solid, but came with similar hinderances to the likes of The Works, AKOM and Innuendo CDs. In turn, the early vinyl releases have always been considered the superior way of listening to this album. In this particular instance, Ive based the Restoration on the original USA pressing ð Using the original 1985 CD as the base source, it was a breeze to work with! Basically, only the EQ needed adjusting.
Id go as far as saying its a night and day difference, and in my opinion, it suggests the 2019 Remix wasnt as warranted as it was made out to be. But Ill leave that up to you to decide ð
Additionally, the Extra Tracks folder comes loaded with the extended versions which accompanied the original 12 singles. The 2000 Solo Collection box is our only current digital source for these tracks.
Being 100% honest, I knew the box set had Peter Mews finger prints all over it before I even looked at the credits ðĪ·â At least around that time period, he had at least three signature mastering techniques, and unfortunately, I could only fully reverse one of them ðĒ The two I couldnt do anything about were compression and noise reduction (not all tracks were affected by the latter thankfully). Lucky for us, the obnoxious EQ patterns COULD be undone. For those who arent aware, hed always boost the upper bass and upper mids/lower treble areas, leaving the lower mids sucked away of any life.
Before the 2025 Restoration, I was never able to listen to the extended versions all the way through. To my ears at least, they sounded SOOOO bad ð But now theyre restored, I can listen to them no problem and finally appreciate just how fun some of them are ðĪ
The way I reversed those EQ patterns accurately was simple. By measuring the original Mr. Bad Guy CD up against the one Peter Mew remastered for the box set, cancelling out the differences and applying those same changes to the extended versions. From there, I implemented the same adjustments I used on the main album to match the vinyl pressing. Easy as that. No offense to Mr. Mew, but this is how cut and paste his mastering techniques were at the time. In terms of this project, HE was the only real Bad Guy ð (Im being tongue-in-cheek obviously, no hard feelings towards the man)...
No comparisons video sadly! Its a struggle to find the time to make one to an acceptable standard at this time. But anyways, hope you enjoy ð

But for right now, if you caught our Restorations for Queen II and Sheer Heart Attack, your expectations for this one are likely sky high! I better let you know ahead of time that, given the limitations of the mixes and such, the improvements for this album are no where near as drastic Im afraid ðĪ·ââïļ This in addition to the fact that the existing releases were already not too shabby. The original UK vinyl release wasnt plagued with compression like the entirety of Queen II and parts of SHA, so this will be a much more honest reflection of how that original release sounded (which is the point of the project anyway)! BUT, regardless, thanks to the fresher transfers, certain parts of tracks without a doubt sound slightly cleaner on the 2024 Restoration ð

Happy 47th Anniversary to Queens sixth studio album, News Of The World ð°ðĪ
As far as clarity goes, of all Queens albums, this one most definitely has the most potential, and I think thats on full display here! Like most other installments of the project so far, thats thanks to the influence from the 1985 Complete Works box-set (which youll find out more about on the comparisons video).
Now, wed previously encountered an issue with harsh high frequencies on Queen I, to where I felt I had no choice but to step in and turn them down a little. I think the argument can be made that (depending on your sound system), Freddies esses may be a little taxing the ears at certain points here too. Unlike the Queen I issue however, this is a very accurate reflection on how the Complete Works LP actually sounded, so I felt less inclined to take liberties here.
Instead, Im offering up two slightly different versions of the Restoration to hopefully suit your preferences. Theres this one, which remains very true to the enhancements offered on the 1985 LP. And an alternative, where (just like Queen I) the high end has only been recovered half-way ð Id be curious to hear which version you end up leaning towards...
