What is Straight tear? It is When the paper fibers split apart quite evenly, and mostly towards the paper grain direction.
What is Reemay? - Reemay is a non-woven polyester fabric. - It used as a support media for documents to be repaired, interleaving, or drying material. more info about Reemay: talasonline.com/Reemay
What is Japanese tissue? A strong thin paper made from vegetable fibers. May be made from one of three plants: Kozo plant, Mitsumata, and Gampi tree.
what is Organza: A thin, plain weave, sheer fabric traditionally made from silk. Many modern organzas are woven with synthetic filament fibres such as polyester or nylon.
How to use the ready-made self-adhesive Tissue paper? 1 - Peel a strip of required tissue. This tear will be mend using 3.5 gsm Tissue 2 - Apply the glued part (the shiny surface) Over the tear. 3 - Apply some moisture over the Reemay (distilled water).
in this video tutorial, I am using here (CMC 6%) Sodium Carboxymethylcellulose as an adhesive.
Don't use: - Tape (sellotape), scotch tape, Etc. - Filmoplast P Tape, it is archival but not recommended for rare objects due to its reversibility. - Heatset tissue (shiny and uses heat) However, it is reversible with isopropyl alcohol, acid-free, and buffered with magnesium carbonate. As well it has long fibers, and it is transparent.
In conclusion, all types of commercial self-adhesive tapes should be avoided in historic document conservation and restoration.

It provides a lightweight enclosure that allows you to view and handle objects without touching them directly. This helps keep the documents or photographs soil-free and prevents the transfer of fingerprints that can discolor your material and cause photographic images to fade.
Encapsulation requires the use of two sheets of archival quality polyester film, Melinex 516 or Mylar D, which are ultrasonically welded around the perimeter of the object. This differs greatly from the lamination process where the plastic film directly adheres to the artifact. An encapsulated object can be extracted from its enclosure at any time simply by breaking the weld and removing it from the polyester sleeve. The object does not adhere to the polyester film. Plastic films that are safe to use with objects of historic value are polyester, polyethylene, and polypropylene. Polyester is the most stable of the three. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastics are unstable and should never be used. Encapsulation is not appropriate for objects with friable media such as pastels or charcoal drawings.Massive paper deacidification machineSherif Afifi2021-09-19 | Paper material that was produced between 1850 and 1980 has a high pH value due to the industrial manufacture of the paper. Because of this the material decomposes easily. This special machines for the massive conservation of library, cultural and archival papers and records have the potential to treat up to 70000 sheet a year. The documents are conveyed through the deacidification tank with a special brush system. The documents stay in the solution for approximately 3.5 minutes. During this time the documents are deacidified, an alkaline buffer is built in and the resizing with methyl cellulose reinforces the paper structure. Effective fixatives prevent colors and inks from fading or bleeding in this water-based process.
After the treatment, any remaining solution is removed by a brush system which then guides the wet documents into the drying unit.
The drying time at approximately 50° is 4 minutes. After leaving the dryer, the documents can be used right away. Speed and temperature are easily adjustable for the deacidification tank and dryer, as well as other operating features.New Alamein مدينة العلمين الجديدة - تطور رهيب في ٣ سنوات فقطSherif Afifi2021-09-11 | مدينة العلمين الجديدة يوم ١٠ سبتمبر ٢٠٢١ مساء

The tears tend to be irregular when it is across the grain direction and tends to be "straight" along the grain direction. Remember! Mechanical made paper has a grain direction. Why mechanical paper has grain direction? Because the fibers travel through the machine on a vibrating mesh, they tend to line up in the same forward direction, parallel to the direction of the side edges of the paper. It means that the handmade paper has no grain direction
The grain direction always paralleled with the book spine
For tears mending use Japanese tissue. What is Japanese tissue? A strong thin paper made from vegetable fibers. May be made from one of three plants: Kozo plant, Mitsumata, and Gampi tree.
The ink solubility tested, and I can use water-based adhesives such as CMC. Since the tear extends over text, the decision made to use 3.5 gsm, for the text legibility
DON'T apply the adhesive OVER the tissue patch This wrong repair technique may end up resulting: 1 - A big patch of visible tissue 2 - Tideline in case of intensively applying water-based adhesive. 3 - Unwanted adhesive stains. 4 - Shiny surface appearance (If silicone paper used instead of Reemay) .
Apply a thin line of adhesive over the tear then place the tissue paper over the glued area. A weight is placed on top until the repair is dry. The tissue will be glued only on the edges of the irregular tear. Remove all the unglued extra tissue fibers, DON'T USE A sharp new blade during this process. Apply the adhesive over the Tissue edges. Moreover, the Polyester sheet acts as a barrier to avoid any excess from the adhesive. The Polyester sheet placed under the unglued tissue margin. The Reemay will Absorb any excess amount of adhesive. What is Reemay? - Reemay is a non-woven polyester fabric. - It used as a support media for documents to be repaired, interleaving, or drying material. more info about Reemay: talasonline.com/Reemay
Mend only one side of the sheet. For thicker paper, it would be better to mend both sides
