2024 marks the 60th anniversary of the beginning of the UN peacekeeping mission in Cyprus. Canadian Peacekeepers were the first to arrive on the ground in 1964, and Canada has maintained involvement in the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) ever since. While tensions on the island have stabilized, the conflict in Cyprus remains unresolved to this day.
Maj (Ret'd) Paul Hale began his military career as a Reservist in July 1970 and transferred to the Regular Force in January 1976. Mr. Hale completed 30 years of service with the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI) and eight overseas deployments in Cyprus (2), Angola, South Africa, the Balkans (2) and Afghanistan (2). The highlight of his deployments was as an election observer for the first democratic elections in South Africa in the spring of 1994. Upon retiring from the Regular Force in 2006, he transferred back to the Reserves until he reached compulsory retirement age. Mr. Hale has a total of just under 42 years of military service.
Sgt (Ret'd) Bob Thomas joined the Militia at 15 years of age and served with the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps as a transport operator and a motorcycle dispatch rider. At age 17, he joined the regular army, serving with the Canadian Provost Corps. Initially deployed in Ontario, Quebec, and the Maritimes with 2Provost Platoon, which was part of the 2nd Canadian Infantry Brigade Group, in 1964, Bob completed a tour of duty with the first contingent of the United Nations Forces in Cyprus. Next was a posting to Camp Borden Provost Detachment. After promotion to Corporal, he served as a shift supervisor and Court Officer. The following year, he returned to the Middle East, serving with the United Nations Emergency Force in Camp Rafah, Egypt, Gaza, Palestine and detached duty in Beirut, Lebanon. On return from the Middle East, Bob was posted to National Defence Headquarters in Ottawa, where he served as a Special Investigator. Bob left the armed forces in 1968 and joined the Belleville City Police Force. In retirement, Bob and Valerie enjoy spending time with their three grandchildren. Additionally, Bob continues to work on his bucket list of motorcycle trips.

Le point culminant de ses déploiements a été son rôle d'observateur électoral lors des premières élections démocratiques en Afrique du Sud au printemps 1994. Après avoir pris sa retraite de la Force régulière en 2006, il est retourné dans la Réserve jusqu'à ce qu'il atteigne l'âge de la retraite obligatoire. M. Hale totalise un peu moins de 42 ans de service militaire.

À l'âge de 17 ans, il s'est engagé dans l'armée régulière et a servi dans le Corps de prévôté canadien. D'abord déployé en Ontario, au Québec et dans les Maritimes avec le 2e peloton de la prévôté qui faisait partie du 2e groupe-brigade d'infanterie canadien, Bob a effectué en 1964 un tour de service avec le premier contingent des forces des Nations Unies à Chypre. Il est ensuite affecté au détachement de la prévôté de Camp Borden. Après avoir été promu caporal, il a exercé les fonctions de chef de quart et d'officier de justice. L'année suivante, il est retourné au Moyen-Orient, où il a servi dans la Force d'urgence des Nations unies à Camp Rafah, en Égypte, à Gaza, en Palestine, et a été détaché à Beyrouth, au Liban. À son retour du Moyen-Orient, Bob est affecté au quartier général de la Défense nationale à Ottawa, où il occupe le poste d'enquêteur spécial. Bob a quitté les forces armées en 1968 et a rejoint la police municipale de Belleville. À la retraite, Bob et Valerie aiment passer du temps avec leurs trois petits-enfants. En outre, Bob continue de travailler sur sa liste de voyages en moto.
