Towards Quantum Energetic Advantage in Photonic Quantum Computing:
The energy consumption of quantum computers is emerging as a critical metric for their scalability and societal impact. In this work, we present the first quantitative analysis of the energetic efficiency of photonic quantum computers, using Boson Sampling as a case study. We evaluate the energy cost of state-of-the-art photonic hardware and identify operational regimes where photonic platforms consume less energy per sample than both classical supercomputers and superconducting quantum processors. Remarkably, this quantum energetic advantage appears even before the threshold for computational advantage.
To explore business applications of this finding, we are partnering with BTQ to investigate the role of energy-efficient photonic sampling in blockchain consensus protocols, as outlined in their recent proposal on quantum Proof-of-Work [arXiv:2305.19865]. This partnership highlights how energetic considerations can accelerate the path from fundamental quantum research to scalable, sustainable, and commercially relevant use cases.
