wocomoHUMANITYHow much do we really know about Somali piracy? Several compelling stories from the world of piracy lend a new and unique perspective on this issue. Flimmer Film AS has managed to get on board the KNM Fritjof Nansen during the three first weeks of their six-month mission, operating as an on-board camera team.
This synopsis is written while on board, after having had three encounters with Somali pirates, and several interceptions of suspected skiffs. Compared to other military vessels in the EU and NATO forces in the Bay of Aden, the Fritjof Nansen is regularly involved with such skirmishes. We have also acquired exclusive rights to rare footage from a real-life hostage situation. The well-known pirate incident on the Russian MV Faina was filmed with a hidden mobile phone, smuggled in by one of the crew members’ underwear.
Piracy is large-scale theft, but when risk hits one of the aortas of global shipping trade, the Somalian pirates aren’t the only ones making big bucks. Huge investments and expensive cargoes are at stake. We show you how the piracy capital of the world is not necessarily Eyl in Somalia, but just as much London. Here, we find insurance companies, lawyers, specialized negotiators and professional ransom handlers. It’s all big business, and these surrounding industries are arguably even more lucrative than the Somalian pirates' activities themselves.
Shipping companies that are wary of the EU and reluctant to cash out the extra insurance premiums might make other, more controversial arrangements: security companies are now also making inlets into the industry. Here, we see footage from a secret training camp of one such company. The bill for this growing, lucrative pirate industry? The shipping companies pass the cost increases onto customers, with insurance companies following suit. Everyone else seems to win; the pirates, the navy, the lawyers, the insurance companies and maybe even the shipping companies – all but normal people and, of course, a few sailors.

Muhamad was 16 when he was arrested and charged with stone-throwing. Filmed from a high angle, he is seen terrified, detained for the first time in his life. The interrogator asks him to name his classmates. "Why are you afraid to say their names?" he demands. "Most of them are in jail anyway. Who do you play soccer with?" Suddenly, hitting the table, the interrogator warns Muhamad, who remains silent, not to play games with him. The interrogator then shouts: "Tell me who you played with!"
After serving an eight-month prison sentence, Muhamad is released. Like many others, he struggles to readjust to his former routine of school and family life and is soon jailed again. The film catches up with him three years later, now a young man. Looking back, he recounts the events of that first traumatic arrest. His story reflects that of an entire generation of young Palestinians. -------

In 2017, there were almost 30,000 homicide victims in the country. Many residents of poor neighborhoods controlled by gangs and armed groups are forced out of their homes, moving to the peripheral areas of big cities and becoming displaced – or even migrants.
Every single day people go missing in Mexico. In the case of missing migrants, they might have been killed, died on the desert, or simply never called back home. There are 26,000 unidentified bodies in the morgues and, on a good day, a forensic team can process three bodies.
It is very difficult for relatives to live in doubt, not knowing for sure whether their loved one is one of the bodies in the morgue. -------

In this contemplative documentary, four destinations in Latin America are revisited through fragments of memories, reconstructed from rubble.
Former inhabitants share the experiences they had there, and through more intimate accounts, evoke memories of a past they do not want to forget. Some of them still visit or even live in these cities. -------
In Humberstone, Chile, the remnants of the landscape and the memories of survivors can scarcely illustrate the past prosperity when the local production of saltpeter was exported worldwide. Near the former town of Fordlândia in Pará, Brazil, squatter-occupied homes stand as the last remnants of an American city built by Henry Ford during the peak of the rubber boom in that region. In Colombia, the population of Armero was almost entirely obliterated by the 1985 eruption of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano. Twenty-five years after being submerged by a dam breach, the ruins of Villa Epecuén in Argentina reemerged, revealing the remains of what was once a bustling hot springs resort town.
We reflect on what we leave behind and what we can leave as our legacy, understanding that everything can have an end and that nothing is free from the struggle against oblivion.

They are taken from their homes at night and interrogated, with mental and physical pressure, which violate international law.
Subject to the military court system, almost all of them are convicted and sent to prison. Behind the official reasoning there’s an underlying systemic motive: when a child is jailed, its family won’t make any noise.
These human rights violations have been documented in numerous reports over the years. Leaked videos of the interrogation tactics show the children being painfully handcuffed and sleep deprived, with no lawyer, no interpreter and no parental presence. They are pushed to confess and turn in their friends. -------

In this video, a project at a French school focusing on the Holocaust allows students to connect their own experiences with those of the victims of the Holocaust. Through powerful testimonies, young students and Daniel Urbejtel share their emotions, discussing what it feels like to be discriminated against, how it tears individuals apart, and the lasting scars it leaves behind. -------
Chapters ▷ 00:00 - Intro ▷ 02:32 - Victim of society ▷ 05:31 - Holocaust survivor ▷ 07:53 - Memorial
Now that 75 years have past since the discovery of the Nazi concentration camps, how can the Holocaust be explained to the teenagers of today? Can it be relevant to them within the turmoil of adolescence? Over the course of a year, the film follows a class of 15 year-old students in a school just outside Paris, as they work on a group project investigating the life of a single Jewish victim of the genocide. Leo Cohn was a German Jewish refugee who became part of the French resistance. As the group project develops, the film chronicles the personal paths of the students. Caroline, Sarah, Mory, Mauricio, Salomé and Guillaume are torn between having to accept their family’s heritage and needing to assert themselves as individuals, with their own understanding of the world. The history of the Holocaust starts to resonate with the students, once it unexpectedly appears to be interwoven with their own personal stories.

In 2014 the two Kurdish students Jenkidar and Hussein start a journey with an unexpected amount of life changing twists and turns. It takes them from a careless student life in Beirut to their beloved hometown of Kobani. Here they pick up video cameras for the first time in their lives and document the Kurdish resistance against ISIS. One by one they introduce us to their family and friends, who one by one become victims in the almost impossible defense of the city. As the battle intensifies it is not possible for Jenkidar and Hussein to stay in Kobani. They must flee in order to survive and end up as refugees in Barcelona and Paris. As they come to terms with their new situation and the experiences from their journey, they realize that they are transformed for life. Despite being painful, they must tell the world about their family and friends, so they did not die in vain.

DIRECTOR`S NOTE I was very curious to hear about the Kurdish struggle, their independence and how the people got together to fight one of the worst terrorist groups in history. For me, it’s a story about the human face of war, about the everyday life in war, something that I have experienced myself as a child growing up in Lebanon during the civil war. I was 8 years old when my family left for Sweden and I have vivid memories of excruciating hours in bunkers, bombings, and playing on the balcony while seeing smoke in the air. In the history books of the future, it will say that Kobani defeated and won the war against ISIS, but with this film I want to show that there are no winners in war. The struggle continues. But the story of the 3,000 fighters defending Kobani, and the humanitarian crisis of the Kurds is something that needs to be told and I'm sure will be retold for generations to come.

An inter-caste couple from india that had to break with their families in order to get married, a Japanese couple that was forced to marry and struggles with love, a knobby german postwar couple and two gay men from the United States, who were only allowed to marry after five decades, solving the associated legal problems by adopting each other.
Four couples from three continents talk openly and honestly about what it means to be together for 50 years or longer. Whatever brought them together, whether it was love or an arranged marriage, they all have one thing in common: they have devoted their entire life to this relationship. In good times, as in bad. Maybe not always happy, certainly not without fighting - but still together. What do you see when you look into each others eyes after an entire life of being together?
Yasemin and Nesrin Şamdereli ("Almanya - Welcome to Germany") made a amusing and touching, an entertaining and profound film about love. With surprising openness, their protagonists talk about sex and morals, love and society, children and partnership.
The award-winning animation artist Izabela Plucinska complements this documentary with clay animations, in which she brings her own tragicomic interpretation of these stories and the protagonists to life.

In a society in which all basic needs have long since been satisfied, a utopia becomes the life goal of an entire generation: absolute freedom and independence. Get out of the hamster wheel of the eternally same. No more annoying jobs, no "what's it all for?", no more living between traffic jams, bad weather and always saving yourself in the weekend. Instead, a self-determined life as a citizen of the world. The motto: get the best out of every day - and still earn a decent living. The so-called digital revolution and cheap flights make it possible. And so impressions of this "freakin' fantastic life" flood the feeds of Instagram & Co - and make it difficult for their normal mortal followers to find a justification for the apparently mediocre life they lead.

Jan Leyers arrived at his fifth station on his journey across Europe: London. The laws in GB are much more liberal when it comes to religion than in the countries he visited before. People are allowed to practice their religion and wear whatever they want, as long as they don't harm others. Jan meets Haitham al-Haddad, a popular Sheikh who is the chairman of a Sharia council, one of eighty in GB. He decides on marriages, divorces and inheritances. Jan discusses his rather controversial views on the Islamic law, especially on apostasy (al-riddah). What are the punishments for a Muslim who renounces his faith? The question of apostasy in Islam is one of the most controversial to have afflicted the Muslim world throughout its history. Jan Leyers interroge justement le Sheikh sur le respect de la liberté religieuse dans l'Islam. Car il faut rappeller que plusieurs pays musulmans comme le Soudan condamnent à mort l'apostat.

What is the future of Islam in Europe? How hopeful can we be on an European, enlightened version of Islam? Is that something Muslims themselves actually want? And will it be possible to overcome the Europeans’ distrust of Islam?
Jan Leyers goes in search of answers. He heads off to Sarajevo, Budapest, Vienna, Hamburg, Paris, London, Copenhagen and Malmö. He listens to the voice of experts and the word on the street and talks with religious men and women, with ex-believers and new converts. What do they hope for and what are their concerns? In this series, Jan stays true to his style: nuanced and respectful, without shying away from controversy.

Is faith a way of engaging in life – or a way of escaping from it? Is faith an instrument of suppression – or a message of love? Do we believe in God because we fear death? This documentary attempts to answer these universal questions. Faith has always been a part of the human condition, every society has been built around beliefs, that seeks to create one united body. Myths and beliefs surround us, they are part of one's culture and life: believing is intrasect to the human condition. Human societies have been built around their beliefs. They have ordered their world by trying to explain it. To assert this, the documentary carries us to Denmark, where we meet a priest giving religious classes to young Danes, by encouraging Christian values, from charity to love of neighbor. but teenagers, whose cognitive abilities are still poor, are more likely to believe what they're told. Cognitive ability plays an important role in belief. And in Japan, where the Aum sect is gaining ground in the public arena, young people who have been pushed to the limit by the Japanese system of excellence are finding refuge in this sect. Because the system has crushed them, this sect has given them a helping hand at a time of profound fragility, a perfect opportunity for indoctrination.

They entered an isolation they haven’t abandoned to this day. The film turns around in front of the forest and looks back at those who want to contact the isolated Mashco Piro: missionaires, miners and villagers, who all feel it is their right to decide on the Mashco Piro’s fate. Only a group of anthropologists stands between them and the Mashco Piro. When a murder happens, Carl Gierstorfer is there to document and let the story carry itself.

Until a decade ago, little was known about this people of the Peruvian Amazon; there were only random encounters with boat travelers and a few pictures taken by light aircrafts on overflights. But then - for reasons that still are mysterious - the Mashco Piro made themselves known to park rangers and indigenous settlements, many of which lie directly on the opposite bank of the Madre de Dios river. These settlements are fully connected to the modern world with mobile phone, satellite TV connection and villagers that have seen big cities and other countries. Only a group of anthropologists working for Peru’s Ministry of Culture protect the isolated Mashco Piro from outside forces, who are pushing to contact and infiltrate their territory of pristine rainforest. Some believe the Mashco Piro want to be part of the modern world, while others want to take over their lands to cut timber, mine for gold or smuggle cocaine. And while the Mashco Piro are totally unaware of the riches they sit on and the power-struggles they have provoked, they themselves have shown an increasing curiosity about the outside world. They try to stop passing boats, asking for ‘things’ – some of apparent symbolic importance like shirts and life-vest, other of practical use like knives and machetes. Sometimes, their interactions with the outside world have been violent.
In 2015, they killed a 15-year-old boy in native community, and in 2018 a 74-year old villager, who entered their territory to go fishing. Both murders left the communities feeling helpless and afraid. There were angry calls for revenge, accusations against the anthropologists and campaigns to contact the Mashco Piro. Few wanted to acknowledge that “contact” is a process that almost inevitably ends with disease, death and the loss of identity for the contacted, a questions this film will explore.

In the dressing room of the first lingerie store in the Kurdish Autonomous Region of Iraq, women regain their sensuality and sexuality after times of war and oppression. The film director Jacqueline van Vugt follows Kurdish-Dutch Shapol Majid, the owner of the the lingerie shop opened in 2014, but also several generations of women, who tell their vulnerable story there about love, sexuality, faith, war, and freedom. Which effect can this lingerie store have on their lives? Will the lingerie, so close to the skin, act as a balm to ease the pain? The documentary explores these questions with deep humanity and empathy for these women marked by war and oppression and who are alienated from their bodies due to illness, injury and conservative sexual morals. "Up to G-Cup" is an honest and compelling film in which women are portrayed in a world dominated by war, faith, men, their mothers and grandmothers.

This is a story told by a young Palestinian who grew up in Sweden. What made Leila Khaled become one of the world’s most famous terrorists and the most famous Palestinian Woman of all?

What kind of a person hijacks an airplane? The family of Leila Khaled, fled to Lebanon in fear of the armed Jewish group Stern Gang. This paramilitary unit first came to Palestine after WW2 to prepare the territory for those who had survived the Nazi concentration camps. While the persecution of one nation in Europe ended, the oppression of another began in the Middle East. At the age of twenty-four, Leila Khaled joined a commando unit of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. In 1969 she hijacked an airplane full of civilians in Rome, threatening to blow it up. In the end, no one died, but the world press became interested in the Israeli-Palestinian issue. For most Palestinians - at home and in exile - she became an icon, something more permanent than a reflection in the mirror. Her charisma also influenced the director, belonging to a younger generation, who went on a journey to meet her childhood idol at a time when she also began to question her earlier views. The question remains whether Leila's act did in fact damage, rather than improve, the situation in Palestine.

Five weddings. Five completely different ways to celebrate them in Europe. And a presenter interested in getting married. Authentic, warm and humorous, this documentary series accompanies people before and during the supposedly most important day of their lives.
Every year more than two million Europeans say yes to each other. No wedding in Europe is the same as any other. Lived and loved European diversity. The Finns in the far north marry unlike Turkish Cypriots, unlike Italians with southern European influences, unlike gay couples in Catholic Ireland, unlike folkloristic Bulgarians in the poorest country of the EU. What are the differences between the ceremonies? What is the most important thing about a wedding across cultures and countries? How do the preparations work? How to find the perfect wedding dress? What role does religion play? What goes wrong? And how does it feel to say yes to one's life?
Presenter and producer Andreas Korn come amazingly close to the wedding couples. He laughs, suffers, cries and celebrates with them. One of his favorite rituals: "I really liked how in Finland the bride and her best friends sweated out their ex-lovers in the sauna. And when she ran around the hut and shouted the names out loud to be free for marriage, I had to laugh a lot. A super ritual!”
And despite all the differences between weddings, one thing is the same everywhere: love. No matter who marries whom where in Europe.

Therefore, the couple distributes flyers until one day before the wedding in their home villages and the surrounding area.
A highlight one day before the wedding is the Henna Night. The splendidly costumed groom picks up his bride with the horse from home and rides her across the village to the actual ceremony. There the bride's palms and fingers are dyed with henna. Since it is the last night before the wedding ceremony, it is supposed to be symbolically sad. Therefore, sad songs are sung for a while until the bride cries. The tears are hidden under a red veil. Red symbolizes fertility, great love, many children and prosperity.
The wedding itself takes place in the most magnificent location in the area. After the short and painless civil wedding, everything revolves around money: The 1500 wedding guests who accepted the invitation queue to congratulate the couple and give money. The couple recorded everything on video to see who had "helped" everything. The highlight towards the end of the wedding is the Krug dance. It decides on the fertility of the marriage.

What do the neighbors in the small town say about the couple and the Catholic pastor?
The IT expert Wayne (32) and the stylist Heitor (30), are having an absolute dream wedding in designer suits and fireworks, in which every detail has been planned for years. Even Hollywood could not have staged this perfect ceremony more beautifully and romantically.
But the happy ending was in jeopardy, because the ordered tailor-made suits were not finished in time. Only three days before the wedding they hear about the mishap. Therefore, they have to reschedule at short notice and search for new suits.
A church wedding is still not possible even for religious same-sex couples. Why not?
From celebrant Lynne we learn a lot about special Irish customs such as handfasting and ring warming, two elements that the bridegrooms absolutely want to integrate into their celebration. In handfasting, the witnesses connect the hands of the couple with ribbons, which symbolizes the marriage covenant. During ring warming, the witnesses and closest friends warm the wedding rings and wish them all the best. Only then are the rings attached.

What is their formula for happiness? He not only asks the bridal couple, the kindergarten teacher Marjo (26) and the salesman Tomi (30), but also meets a luck researcher and the probably most famous inhabitant of Lapland - Santa Claus.
But the film focuses on the bridal couple's personal formula for happiness. What do the days before the wedding and the big day itself look like? The bride meets for a special ceremony with her best friends in the sauna. She sweats out her ex-lovers in a T-shirt. This is how she is cleaned before the wedding. Meanwhile, the groom has shot an elk with his father-in-law, which he deep-fried for the wedding party in a familiar men's circle. The bride and groom's reindeer shoes are ready for colder times on the fireplace.
The wedding itself takes place in a red wooden hut for half an hour out in the lonely woods of Rovaniemi's surroundings. Everything was decorated and prepared by the couple themselves. Photos of the animals on the buffet testify to the heroic deeds of the hunters. So, you can proudly see Tomi with a huge fish, which he caught while fly fishing and which is now roasted and prepared for the guests. Again, and again the men go out and meet behind trees. There they have hidden alcohol, which they drink secretly. Of course, the women know what's going on. Everyone playfully handles the old custom from times when alcohol was forbidden at weddings.
A Finnish proverb says: "All you need for ultimate happiness are your own red wooden hut and a potato field. Perhaps other nations can also learn something from this modesty?

They wanted to exchange ideas with the local musicians, dancers and singers and wanted to play, dance and sing together.
The result is a funny and serious cultural dialogue in which they also learn a lot about the living conditions and individual fates of their musical partners. Peter Heller and his team accompanied the Biermösl on tour through the noisy townships of the big cities to spontaneous neighborhood meetings and joint performances. And because Hansi, Stofferl and Michael Well are also curious and critical travelers, you learn a lot about apartheid, slavery and oppression in the film. And also about the African gumboot dance, which is strikingly similar to the Schuhplattler.
Back in Bavaria, the Biermösl Blosn, supported by Gerhard Polt, humorously teach their audience African things.
The gumboot dance was invented by black miners almost a hundred years ago when they had to toil in the gold and diamond mines of the apartheid state. Since it was strictly forbidden for them to speak underground - for fear that they would band together and rebel against their oppressors - the workers invented a special secret language: They slapped their rubber boots loudly once, twice or several times with the palm of their hand and communicated with each other in this way. Over the days it developed into a rhythmic dance, the Gumboot Dance, the "African Plattler".

But that's not all: the modern couple reinterprets many Italian customs. Simona (33), a banker, and Gaetano (34), a bar manager, have decided not to have a church wedding in Catholic Italy. A few years ago, it was still a scandal - today a trend among young Sicilians. Perhaps also because it reduces the already high costs a little. On average, an Italian wedding should cost around 30,000 euros.
Instead of a priest the ceremony is held by the best friend Laura. One after the other she calls friends who celebrate the couple in touching speeches. The handing over of the wedding rings is done by her lively bitch Selma. Strapped to her back, she is supposed to transport the rings once across the hall. In the past, a particularly liquid man from the village was chosen for this task, who then also supported the couple financially.
The pressure of money at the wedding is not only on the bride and groom. Also, all guests, relatives and witnesses must raise - from German view - enormous sums as gift to the bride and groom. And this in one of the poorest areas of Italy - in Palermo. During a city stroll through the capital, Andreas Korn investigates the economic situation of the poorhouse in Italy and asks the younger generation: "Who can afford a wedding here anyway?
But none of this can be felt at the couple's wedding. It is eaten like God in... Italy and celebrated as if there were no tomorrow. Perhaps precisely because Sicily is undergoing social, political and economic change.

The explosive power of sexuality has one legitimate place: marriage. If at all... How can fulfilment be found? This is related by an Orthodox Jewish settler couple in Israel, a married Shi’ite Muslim man in Lebanon, a Catholic married couple in Germany and a Buddhist monk in Thailand. In Islam, marriage is a contract, which in Shia Islam can be tempopary. This temporary marriage or "Nikah mut'ah" allows a man to get married with the consent of the Muslim religion for a limited amount of time. The union can last for a few hours, days or months. It's in fact an ancient Islamic pratice, and was designed to enable a man to have a wife for a short period when traveling long distances. However Sunni Muslims generally prohibit it, they critic this pratice to be a cover for prostitution or the exploitation of women, by allowing men taking on multiple wives for a limited time.

Jan discusses his rather controversial views on the Islamic law.

In 2015, Sweden welcomed approximately 60.000 refugees from the Middle East. They can practice their religion freely. Jan joins a large group of Swedish muslims as they gather in a park in Malmö for a joint prayer. Many refugees live in the rather rural areas of Sweden. Jan speaks with Shahla, an Iraqi Kurdish interpreter who teaches in the village Björnhammaren, where only refugee families live. He also residents like Alaa, a Syrian refugee with two wifes and nine children. The Nordic system favoured the acceptance of new religious communities. But isn't Nordic secularism now facing the limits of its principles? Identity drifts seem to lurk in the shadows. The intensification of debates on religion in the Nordic countries, especially following the incident of the burnt Qurans, testifies to the acceleration of secularization.

Educated, eloquent, western. Nobody would guess that when Jaha Dukureh was a baby, she was “cut” - subjected to female genital mutilation (FGM). When she was 15 she was taken to New York to marry a 45 year-old man she’d never met before, arranged by her own father, a powerful imam in Gambia. After 10 years in the US, Jaha returns to her native country in West Africa demanding that her own family and society end the practices that almost ruined her life. With around 80% of all women in the Gambia being cut, this is not only her own issue. These are personal, political, religious and cultural confrontations.

This excerpt shows the destinies and actions of a handful of men and women who are fighting for the future of hundreds of children and families. But this struggle to improve the lives of these children is not without its difficulties. The families are mostly dysfunctional and live a fragile daily existence, offering no healthy living environment for these children, most of whom have dropped out of school. They stray far from the school path because of their family's economic obligations. Rural areas are much more affected, with some children attending only occasionally, others dropping out and then returning, and still others leaving school for good.

Zineb El Rhazoui is a journalist, a staff member with Charlie Hebdo, who is born in Marocco. Her years in Morocco marked her strong interest in religion, particularly Islam. She wanted to understand the society in which she lived and the reasons for the oppression of women and their bodies. But after the Arab Spring, the Moroccan regime carries out some fake reforms and increases the repression. The magazine Zineb works for is banned and it becomes impossible for her to do her job as. She decides to move to Paris. There she can start at a small, satirical newspaper called Charlie Hebdo. As one of the survivors from Charlie Hebdo attack Zineb finds herself at the centre of the media storm in the aftermath of the attack on January 7th 2015, and willy-nilly becomes one of the spokespersons for the newspaper. It's an intense period of extremes. The world watches as François Hollande takes her in his arms during the marche républicaine. Nothing is the same any longer. For Zineb personally the transformation is radical: she now lives under constant police protection, something she had always laughingly refused before. The threat is very real: a hashtag that summons to kill her is retweeted 7000 times. She is now the best protected woman in France with up to 12 bodyguards constantly following her. The most ordinary activities like grocery shopping require a lot of organising. It is practically impossible to work as a journalist. Zineb, who values her freedom so much, is locked in a guarded fortress. The psychological impact of the situation is heavy. But Zineb doesn’t just surrender. She decides to take control of her life again. She becomes pregnant and chooses to keep the child. It is as if she wants to turn her life around: from survival to living life to the fullest.

Northern Iraq's first lingerie store not only sells underwear, but also acts as a meeting place where women connect to their bodies and sensuality after overcoming the traumas of oppression, war, and conservative morality. The store is in Suleimaniyah, a city in the Kurdish Autonomous Region of Iraq, where the male management of the mall state: “A billboard of a woman in lingerie is not possible - a woman in a bra and thong but without a head, maybe.” Yet the women in Up to G-Cup are open with each other and the camera.

Despite the repressive measures against the hirak movement, the authoritative and military system that rules Algeria since its independence, has not consumed yet this popular and pacific movement.
Through the testimonies of young Algerians, we discover a conservative and patriarchal Algerian society where it is forbidden to love outside of marriage. Sonia, a 26-year-old pyschiatrist, protests against the social and family constraints that relegate women to the status of minors. Talking about sexuality remains a taboo in Algeria, it can only be done in the shelter of inquisitive eyes, in Dikki, hiding places where young people meet to talk freely. Women are very present in the mobilization against Bouteflika, they demand alongside other activists of the Hirak more freedom and sexual freedom. Sonia, who is committed to the defense of women's rights, welcomes the essential place of Algerian women in the revolution. Indeed, through the revolution of the smiles, the Algerian women imposed themselves in the public space and were able to make themselves known and to shoot their anger for equality and to denounce the Family Code.

While Bouteflika has been removed from power, the situation in Algeria has hardly changed despite the hopes for change and freedom. Algeria remains a country without prospects for Algerian youth, who have fought for a better future in their country. Won over by disillusionment and despair, some decide to leave for Europe to guarantee a better future. But embarked on boats of fortune some will never reach the European coasts. Through the testimonies of young Algerians, this excerpt exposes an Algerian youth that is both desperate and hopeful that the change brought about by the Hirak will take shape. A youth thus divided, between those who no longer see any prospects in a country blocked by a regime in crisis of legitimacy, and the others who prefer to stay and continue to fight for the rebuilding of democracy in the country. The pandemic has dealt a blow to the Hirak movement, preventing them from taking their demands to the streets as they did during the Smiles Revolution in 2019. Algeria is between hope of change and a desire to leave

In southwestern Guinea Bissau there are some islands where a very special people live, the Bissago. What is it that makes them so special? It is not the fact of living in balance and harmony with the spectacular nature that surrounds them, taking from the land or the sea only what they need to survive. Neither is their deep animistic spirituality, which marks their life with rites to acquire the knowledge of their ancestors. What makes them so special is that, in the Bissago society, the woman is the protagonist.
They are the ones who decide how to manage the crops or punish the crimes, they are the priestesses of the temple, those who can communicate with the gods, the forces of nature and the spirits of the deceased. For the Bissago, the woman is feared and respected, since they consider her capable of deciding about life and death.
This documentary focuses on the lives of some of the women of Eticoga, the main village on the island of Orango. Through their lives and ways of looking we will know the most outstanding and peculiar aspects of this matriarchal society so different, not only from the Western way of life, but from the rest of Africa and almost all other cultures on the planet.

#documentary #algeria #youth #protests #arabspringFemale former soldier reveals the psychological scars of serving in the West BankwocomoHUMANITY2023-03-29 | This is an excerpt from the documentary "Is war still a man's business? Israeli women soldiers give shocking testimonies about Israeli army" (First Hand Films) Click here to watch the full documentary: youtu.be/jI6rTimkfJE
Israel is the only country in the world where 18-year-old girls are drafted for compulsory military service. In this award-winning documentary, the frank testimonials of six female Israeli soldiers stationed in Gaza and the West Bank pack a powerful emotional punch. The former soldiers share shocking moments of negligence, flippancy, immaturity and power-tripping as they describe atrocities they witnessed and participated in. The psychological transformation that these young women underwent as a result of military service is both upsetting and riveting. In fact, for some of them, the pride of serving their country and doing "good" will soon give way to a feeling of disillusionment and fear when faced with the reality of the horrors of war. The culture of war transforms people: personalities change, moral codes are subverted, values are supplanted and masks are constructed to dull the pain of what they did and didn’t do in uniform.
