Russia has sent a powerful strategic signal as its military conducted a training launch of a nuclear-capable intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome, shortly after CIA Director John Ratcliffe’s reported visit to Moscow.
The mobile, solid-fuel ICBM travelled more than 6,700 kilometres to the Kura test range in Russia’s Far East, where its training warheads reached the designated target area.
Russia’s Defence Ministry described the launch as a successful combat-training exercise, saying the missile followed its planned trajectory and completed all assigned objectives.
Although Moscow did not officially identify the missile, independent experts have assessed it as the RS-24 Yars, a nuclear-capable ICBM that forms a major part of Russia’s land-based strategic nuclear forces.
The timing of the launch has drawn international attention, coming amid heightened tensions between Russia and the United States and shortly after the CIA chief’s Moscow visit.
Russia reportedly notified the United States of the launch in advance, consistent with existing strategic risk-reduction procedures.
