Purple Heart Hammer Handle -- Tool Restoration:
A few months back I found this engineer's hammer at a yard sale. Since it came without a handle and I love it's electric orange color; I thought I'd add a purple heart handle to add even more color to the mix!
I start by drawing out the shape of the handle on a scrap piece of purple heart. I based the shape on a mini sledge hammer handle I have, which is a little shorter than a traditional handle for this type of hammer.
From there, I cut one side out on the bandsaw, and used the off cut to trace the other side, so the handle is symmetrical. After that, most of the work was shaping, and fitting the head. I used the bandsaw to rough it out (please be careful if you try this yourself), and then a draw knife to refine the shape. I spray painted though the head of the mallet to mark the shape I was aiming for, and then used a saw to cut the cheek of the handle. I shaped the tenon at the top until there was a snug fit. I used the belt sander to refine the handle even more, and finished it off with some hand sanding.
I drilled a stop hole through the tenon to prevent the handle from splitting, and then cut out a wedge from leftover material. The wedge needs to be quarter sawn, so it doesn't fall apart. I sanded the wedge to get a nice taper, then assembled all the parts.
Not filmed (for obvious reasons) are the few days between sanding the handle and putting on the finish. Purple heart turns gray when you sand it, and after a few days, the surface becomes bright purple again. It's good to let it sit for a while.
I finished it all off with a couple of coats of clear shellac. That will help that handle stay purple.
Then it was time to test it out!!!
