Cycling the world - Asia: episode 36
I wake up at my camp in Wadi Damm and immediately start climbing toward Jebel Shams on one of the toughest roads I have faced in Oman. The dirt and sand track is brutally steep, one wall after another, with endless climbing through the mountains. Along the way I stop at a mosque for water and rest where a local man surprises me with homemade Omani sweets made from dates, sesame and coconut. The struggle continues higher and higher until I finally reach Jebel Shams, but the summit is cold, windy and crowded with tourists. As night falls I search for shelter from the wind and eventually find a hidden camping spot below the peak, knowing the mountain still is not done with me.
