“The Secret Smile” is a restrained, introspective synthpop track about emotional survival, quiet defenses, and the masks we wear to get through life. Subtle, melodic, and deeply human. It's the third track, and title track, from my forthcoming EP, "The Secret Smile."
“The Secret Smile” explores the idea of emotional camouflage — the small, practiced expressions we use to protect ourselves when words feel impossible or unsafe. Rather than telling a story outright, the song focuses on adaptation: how coping mechanisms form, how they linger, and how they quietly shape who we become.
Musically consistent with the other tracks from the upcoming EP The Secret Smile, this song leans into measured synth textures, space, and atmosphere, allowing the lyrics to breathe without dramatics or excess. It’s not about resolution or confrontation — it’s about endurance, privacy, and the truth that sometimes survival looks ordinary from the outside.
This track follows “My Mother’s Tears” and “Such a Big Man,” completing the emotional core of the EP while leaving space for what comes next.

My secret smile is known
to few
because it's my form of truth
my eyes have seen more than most
from a childhood bereft of hope
I'd rather just grin and bear it
or maybe try and just forget it
and show everyone my secret smile
not many people know
everything that I've seen
they look at my face
and aren't sure what to believe
the look that I give them
reflects the years of pain
but the secret smile is there
so I don't have to explain
my secret smile is only
something I use when cornered
a defense that I've developed
when my thoughts are disordered
time after time it's helped me
in situations to break free
yeah my secret smile has saved me
on this lifelong journey
it's my secret smile
