After a baby is born, the lungs deliver oxygen to the baby's blood. Oxygen is critical to the function and survival of the organs.
The heart pumps unoxygated blood to the lungs. Within the lungs are small air sacs called alveoli. Oxygenated blood cells travel within the alveoli and collect oxygen to be delivered to the body.
An important component of the alveolus is a thin coating of a substance called surfactant. Surfactant is important because it helps keep the alveolus open. Without the surfactant, the alveolus would collapse. If it collapses, air exchange cannot occur, and less oxygen is delivered to the baby's blood and organs.
