I wanted to write a story for each song on "Sampler Platter," and this one is pure funk from start to finish. In the original draft, Kendrick was supposed to be SZA’s brother, and at this point in the story, he’d had enough of these dudes playing her, hence the title.
The storyline eventually got scrapped, but some of those elements still made it into the final track. Kendrick is one of those artists who just sounds good on damn near anything, and when I found this funk-soul sample, it just worked.
The bassline carried most of the early drafts, but when it came to the hook, I wanted the beat to really match the energy of the vocals. The way it all came together gave it a "To Pimp a Butterfly" feel, even though it’s a "DAMN." track. Absolutely love how this one turned out.
