The Pucará de Rumicucho is an Ecuadorian archaeological site located in the parish of San Antonio, in the Metropolitan District of Quito, in the province of Pichincha. It has an area of almost 3 ha built on a hill near the place where the French Geodesic Mission estimated the equatorial strip. It was built by the Incas between the years 1480 and 1500 for military purposes, although due to the distribution of its architectural space it could have also served for religious affairs. However, materials have been found that reveal the previous and simultaneous occupation of local inhabitants such as the Panzaleos. quitus, caranquis and cuasmal.

The name of the pucará derives from two Quechua voices: "Rumi" (Stone) and "Cucho" (corner), by concatenating the voices you get "Rumicucho" which means "stone corner"; although formerly it was called Lulumbamba from "Lulum" (fertile) and "Bamba" or "Pampa" (plain) which means "fertile plain"

It fulfilled diverse functions such as military, religious and immigration control, although of all of them the most important was the first. After the conquests of the surrounding areas, the Incas built this pucará as a way to consolidate their positions. Researchers and archaeologists deduce that Rumicucho fulfilled the military function not only because of the strategic location in which the pucará was located, but also because of the architectural form. that is, by the distribution of spaces and objects found. As for the religious function, the architectural form of the third terrace is well known and as an observation of the La Marca and Cayambe hills, hills that are arranged horizontally in an east-west direction that at the equinox the sun travels in that direction and taking into account It is said that the pucará is located a short distance from the equatorial strip, so it follows that Rumicucho was also a place of worship for the inti and an astronomical observatory. It also served as a checkpoint between Quito and the northern towns, the Incas controlled the entrance and exit of Quito through Rumicucho.

Rumicucho belongs to the mixed architectural style (combination of Inca architectural styles with local architectural styles), is of the pirka or rustic type and corresponds to the imperial or expansion phase.[citation needed] It is around 380 m long by 75 m wide, made up of 5 terraces following the pyramidal shape of the hill.
These terraces have different shapes (rectangular, quadrangular and circular) and different sizes. The distributed shape of the pucará is elongated in a north-south direction. The distribution of spaces is as follows.
First terrace: Ritual place and food consumption.
Second terrace: Ritual place and food consumption.
Third terrace: Ceremonial area.
Fourth terrace: Unknown.
Fifth terrace: Domestic and residential area
Lateral spaces: Domestic and residential area
