⚜️ PSYCHOLOGY FOR HOMIES ⚜️
ADHD & FOCUS
What if your problem isn’t that you can’t focus…
but that you’ve been taught the wrong way to access focus?
Because somewhere along the way…
you learned focus was supposed to come first.
Focus first.
Motivation first.
Clarity first.
Discipline first.
Then action.
But ADHD brains don’t work like that.
ADHD brains often discover focus through movement.
Through momentum.
Through engagement.
Through action.
Not before it.
After it.
And because nobody taught you this…
you spent years waiting.
Waiting to feel ready.
Waiting to feel motivated.
Waiting to feel focused.
Waiting for some magical state to arrive before you begin.
Meanwhile your nervous system was quietly screaming:
“JUST START.”
In this episode of Psychology for Homies, we explore why ADHD focus works differently, why so many people feel broken because of it, and how action itself can become the doorway into concentration.
In this video I break down:
⚜️ What ADHD actually does to attention
⚜️ Why focus is often an outcome, not a prerequisite
⚜️ The neuroscience of interest, novelty, urgency, and challenge
⚜️ Why ADHD brains struggle with boring but important tasks
⚜️ The hidden relationship between dopamine and attention
⚜️ Why overthinking kills momentum
⚜️ How perfectionism creates procrastination
⚜️ Why “trying harder” often makes things worse
⚜️ The difference between forcing focus and creating focus
⚜️ Practical ways to build momentum when your brain won’t cooperate
Because ADHD isn’t:
A lack of attention.
It’s often a difficulty regulating attention.
You can stare at a wall for twenty minutes.
Or accidentally spend six hours researching medieval swordsmiths.
The issue isn’t that attention is missing.
The issue is that attention behaves like a wild animal.
It doesn’t respond well to being bullied.
It responds to engagement.
Curiosity.
Novelty.
Challenge.
Movement.
Maybe the greatest ADHD lie is:
“I’ll do it when I feel focused.”
Because action creates focus far more often than focus creates action.
The first five minutes are usually the battle.
After that…
the river starts moving.
Maybe your brain isn’t broken.
Maybe you’ve been trying to start the engine by waiting for the car to move.
