In May 2020, Patricia Ripley was accused of drowning her 9-year-old non-verbal autistic son, Alejandro Ripley, then fabricating a dramatic carjacking story involving two black men to cover it up — a case that has drawn comparisons to Susan Smith.
Prosecutors say she first tried to drown Alejandro in a canal behind a Kendall housing complex. After he was rescued by neighbors, she allegedly drove him to a second location near the Miccosukee Golf & Country Club and pushed him into the water, where he drowned.
