On January 29, 2025, American Eagle Flight 5342, operated by PSA Airlines, collided mid-air with a U.S. Army Sikorsky VH-60M Black Hawk helicopter near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. Tragically, all 67 individuals aboard both aircraft are presumed dead. Air traffic control audio reveals that moments before the collision, the helicopter crew confirmed visual contact with Flight 5342 and requested "visual separation," which was approved by the controller. Shortly after, the controller instructed the helicopter to pass behind the airliner. The subsequent collision occurred at an altitude of less than 300 feet, causing both aircraft to crash into the Potomac River. Emergency responders faced challenging conditions, including cold temperatures and strong winds, during their search and recovery efforts. This incident marks the first fatal event for American Airlines since 2001 and the first major commercial plane crash in the U.S. since 2009.
