"I think my role is to try to facilitate, as much as possible, solidarity work between Palestinian freedom fighters and Black freedom fighters, and then be able to point to certain kinds of historical texts and historical analyses that will help us understand the overlap of what it means to deal with catastrophe. Because both peoples have catastrophic consciousness, both people are blues people. And the blues is about what? It's about catastrophe.
Blues lyrically expresses catastrophe: Strange fruit - catastrophe. Nobody loves me but my mama, she might be jivin' too - that's catastrophic. And the Palestinian people have a catastrophic consciousness. Which means they have to muster unbelievable vision and will and agency in order to come to terms with the ongoing catastrophe. And I'm talking about not just the occupation, almost fifty years, but going back to 1948. And so in that sense there's strong sense for solidarity, but you could imagine there's people that don't want to see that solidarity." - Cornel West

Cornel West is a prominent and provocative democratic intellectual. He is Professor of the Practice of Public Philosophy at Harvard University and holds the title of Professor Emeritus at Princeton University.
