Thermal pad failure is a common reason the PS5 Slim starts running hot and loud over time. Thermal pads move heat from chips and power components into the shields/heatsinks—when they dry out, crack, shrink, or lose compression, air gaps form and heat stays trapped, forcing higher fan speeds.
Quick test: lift a pad and check for dryness, cracks, shrinkage, tearing, or crumbling edges. Then press lightly—good pads spring back. If they stay flattened or feel too thin, contact may be poor and cooling performance drops.
In my maintenance service, I use thermal putty instead of pre-cut pads because PS5 Slim uses multiple pad thicknesses across the board. Putty conforms to the exact gap under pressure, improving contact without guessing thickness.
