Cambridge University Library (the UL) | Prudent Proctor prints a poster. @CamUniLib | Uploaded February 2020 | Updated October 2024, 6 hours ago.
In 1897, a vote took place in Cambridge to decide if women should be granted formal recognition of their degrees. Posters were made to illustrate both sides of the campaign and are on display as part of The Rising Tide: Women at Cambridge exhibition at Cambridge University Library.

Newnham College student Clara Foster left us feedback about buying copies of the posters after visiting the exhibition. Using the University Library’s Historical Printing Room, we were able to act on Clara’s request and produce copies of these historic posters for purchase. Here we see how the posters would have been printed using presses similar to those used in the 19th century for the originals on display.

The posters, along with other merchandise relating to the exhibition and women’s struggle for equality, are available to buy in the Entrance Hall of the library.
No Gowns poster is £30 - freestanding in a basket.
Varsity poster is £20 - in tube rolls.
No Gowns postcard is £1.

The Rising Tide: Women at Cambridge exhibition runs until 21 March 2020. Entry is free.
