A viral Formula 1 clip claims to feature a V10 revving to 21,000 RPM, but does the audio actually support that claim? Using nothing more than sound and a little math, I'll show you how to estimate engine RPM by ear...and why this famous clip doesn't add up.
Then we take the same method and apply it to real rotary engines. I'll compare the sound and frequency of my 2-rotor, 3-rotor, 4-rotor, and 5-rotor engines, explain why they sound similar to respective piston engines, and show how firing frequency creates the pitch you hear.
