Michael has been saying it since the first days of San Diego County Gun Owners: protests do not work. Then he ran across a clip from Sarah Stein Lubrano, a researcher and writer who is not a gun person and is not on our side, saying there is zero evidence that demonstrations change public opinion or government policy.
So what does work? It comes down to people and money, spent on three things:
-Elections. Not just the White House. Your city council, your school board, your sheriff, your county board. Tabletops at gun shops, voter guides, volunteering, and small-dollar fundraising that a local campaign actually feels.
-Lawsuits. They move policy directly, but they take years, they are a coin flip in front of the wrong judge, and there is exactly one thing you can do to help: fund the organizations bringing them.
-Culture. Dakota on what happens at A Girl and A Gun when a woman shows up saying she only came because her husband asked her to, and leaves smiling. No politics, just a good first experience that shapes how she votes on this for the rest of her life.
Michael's exception to the rule is Selma, and he explains why it worked then and cannot be repeated now. Also in here: why Black Lives Matter lost ground it already had, and why the only people reliably changed by a protest are the protesters themselves.
If you have ever wondered what one person can actually do, this is the segment to send them.
